What Surah Al-Ahzab is about
Al-Ahzab, The Combined Forces or The Confederates, is the 33rd surah of the Quran. It was revealed in Medina and is named after the alliance of tribes that besieged the city, an event known as the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq), which most historians date to 5 AH (627 CE). Verses 1 to 30 are in juz 21 and verses 31 to 73 are in juz 22.
The surah opens by telling the Prophet ﷺ to be mindful of Allah, follow what is revealed and rely on Him (1 to 3). Verses 4 and 5 address customs of the time: a wife declared to be like one's mother does not become one, and adopted children are to be called by their own fathers' names. Verse 6 says the Prophet is closer to the believers than they are to themselves and that his wives are their mothers.
Verses 9 to 27 recall the siege. Armies came from above and below, eyes were dazed and hearts rose to throats (10). The hypocrites made excuses to leave, claiming their houses were exposed (13), while the believers said this was what Allah and His Messenger had promised and grew in faith (22). Verse 21 sits in the middle of this passage, describing the Messenger of Allah as an excellent example. Allah turned back the attackers with a wind and unseen forces (9, 25).
Verses 28 to 34 address the Prophet's wives, giving them a choice between worldly life and Allah and His Messenger. Verse 35 lists ten qualities, each for both men and women, who are promised forgiveness and a great reward. Verses 36 to 40 concern the marriage of Zayd and his former wife, and verse 40 states that Muhammad ﷺ is not the father of any of the men among them but the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. Verses 41 to 48 call for frequent remembrance of Allah, and verse 56 tells believers that Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet, so they should do the same. The surah closes with the Trust that the heavens, earth and mountains declined and the human being accepted (72).
Main themes
Reliance on Allah and clearing old customs
The Prophet ﷺ is told to follow revelation and rely on Allah. The surah then sets aside two customs: treating a wife as one's mother by a declaration, and treating adopted children as biological children in name and lineage.
Verses 1–8The siege of Medina
The surah describes the fear when the combined forces surrounded the city, the excuses of the hypocrites, and the steadiness of believers whose faith only increased. Allah sent a wind and unseen forces and the attackers left without gaining anything.
Verses 9–27An excellent example
In the middle of the battle narrative, verse 21 holds up the Messenger of Allah as an excellent example for anyone who hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.
Verses 21–24The Prophet's household and believing men and women
The Prophet's wives are given a choice and told they are not like other women. Verse 35 then names, side by side, men and women who submit, believe, obey, are truthful, patient, humble, charitable, fasting, chaste and who remember Allah.
Verses 28–35Seal of the prophets and remembrance
After addressing Zayd's marriage, the surah states that Muhammad ﷺ is the seal of the prophets. It calls believers to remember Allah often and glorify Him morning and evening, and describes the Prophet as a witness, a bringer of good news, a warner and a light-giving lamp.
Verses 36–48Blessings on the Prophet and the Trust
Verse 56 tells believers to send blessings and peace on the Prophet. The surah ends by urging people to speak justly and describing the Trust that the heavens, earth and mountains refused but the human being took on.

Verses to know
You have an excellent example in the Messenger of Allah; for anyone who seeks Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah frequently.
This verse describes the Messenger of Allah as an excellent example for those who hope in Allah and the Last Day, and is the Quranic basis often given for following the Prophet's way.
Muslim men and Muslim women, believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, patient men and patient women, humble men and humble women, charitable men and charitable women, fasting men and fasting women, men who guard their chastity and women who guard, men who remember Allah frequently and women who remember—Allah has prepared for them a pardon, and an immense reward.
It lists ten qualities and repeats each one for both men and women, promising them all forgiveness and a great reward.
Muhammad is not the father of any of your men; but he is the Messenger of Allah, and the seal of the prophets. Allah is Cognizant of everything.
This verse names Muhammad ﷺ as the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets, the basis of the Muslim belief that he is the last prophet.
Allah and His angels give blessings to the Prophet. O you who believe, call for blessings on him, and greet him with a prayer of peace.
Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet, and believers are told to do the same. This verse is behind the practice of saying salawat, and the ﷺ used after his name.
When Surah Al-Ahzab is recited
Verse 56 is the reason Muslims send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, by saying 'sallallahu alayhi wa sallam' after his name and by reciting salawat in prayer and at other times. Verses 70 and 71 are often recited as part of the opening sermon (khutbat al-haja) used at the start of Friday sermons and marriage contracts, a practice reported in the Sunan collections.

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu ittaqi Allaha wala tutiAAi alkafireena waalmunafiqeena inna Allaha kana AAaleeman hakeeman

Allah did not place two hearts inside any man’s body. Nor did He make your wives whom you equate with your mothers, your actual mothers. Nor did He make your adopted sons, your actual sons. These are your words coming out of your mouths. Allah speaks the truth, and guides to the path.

Call them after their fathers; that is more equitable with Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then your brethren in faith and your friends. There is no blame on you if you err therein, barring what your hearts premeditate. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

The Prophet is more caring of the believers than they are of themselves, and his wives are mothers to them. And blood-relatives are closer to one another in Allah’s Book than the believers or the emigrants, though you should do good to your friends. That is inscribed in the Book.
- 7

Recall that We received a pledge from the prophets, and from you, and from Noah, and Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus son of Mary. We received from them a solemn pledge.

O you who believe! Remember Allah’s blessings upon you, when forces came against you, and We sent against them a wind, and forces you did not see. Allah is Observant of what you do.
- 10

And when a group of them said, “O people of Yathrib, you cannot make a stand, so retreat.” And a faction of them asked the Prophet to excuse them, saying, “Our homes are exposed,” although they were not exposed. They only wanted to flee.

Being stingy towards you. And when fear approaches, you see them staring at you—their eyes rolling—like someone fainting at death. Then, when panic is over, they whip you with sharp tongues. They resent you any good. These have never believed, so Allah has nullified their works; a matter easy for Allah.

Waradda Allahu allatheena kafaroo bighaythihim lam yanaloo khayran wakafa Allahu almumineena alqitala wakana Allahu qawiyyan AAazeezan

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu qul liazwajika in kuntunna turidna alhayata alddunya wazeenataha fataAAalayna omattiAAkunna waosarrihkunna sarahan jameelan
O Prophet! Say to your wives, “If you desire the life of this world and its finery, then let me compensate you, and release you kindly.
- 29

But if you desire Allah, His Messenger, and the Home of the Hereafter, then Allah has prepared for the righteous among you a magnificent compensation.”

Ya nisaa alnnabiyyi man yati minkunna bifahishatin mubayyinatin yudaAAaf laha alAAathabu diAAfayni wakana thalika AAala Allahi yaseeran
O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits a proven indecency, the punishment for her will be doubled. And that would be easy for Allah.
- 31
Waman yaqnut minkunna lillahi warasoolihi wataAAmal salihan nutiha ajraha marratayni waaAAtadna laha rizqan kareeman
But whoever of you remains obedient to Allah and His Messenger, and acts righteously, We will give her a double reward; and We have prepared for her a generous provision.

O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women, if you observe piety. So do not speak too softly, lest the sick at heart lusts after you, but speak in an appropriate manner.
- 33

And settle in your homes; and do not display yourselves, as in the former days of ignorance. And perform the prayer, and give regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah desires to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you thoroughly.
- 34
Waothkurna ma yutla fee buyootikunna min ayati Allahi waalhikmati inna Allaha kana lateefan khabeeran
And remember what is recited in your homes of Allah’s revelations and wisdom. Allah is Kind and Informed.

Wama kana limuminin wala muminatin itha qada Allahu warasooluhu amran an yakoona lahumu alkhiyaratu min amrihim waman yaAAsi Allaha warasoolahu faqad dalla dalalan mubeenan
It is not for any believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have liberty of choice in their decision. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has gone far astray.
- 37

When you said to him whom Allah had blessed, and you had favored, “Keep your wife to yourself, and fear Allah.” But you hid within yourself what Allah was to reveal. And you feared the people, but it was Allah you were supposed to fear. Then, when Zaid ended his relationship with her, We gave her to you in marriage, that there may be no restriction for believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons, when their relationship has ended. The command of Allah was fulfilled.
- 38
Ma kana AAala alnnabiyyi min harajin feema farada Allahu lahu sunnata Allahi fee allatheena khalaw min qablu wakana amru Allahi qadaran maqdooran
There is no blame on the Prophet regarding what Allah has ordained for him. Such is the pattern of Allah among those who passed before. The command of Allah is an absolute decree.
- 39

Huwa allathee yusallee AAalaykum wamalaikatuhu liyukhrijakum mina alththulumati ila alnnoori wakana bialmumineena raheeman
It is He who reaches out to you, and His angels, to bring you out of darkness into the light. And He is Ever-Merciful towards the believers.

Wala tutiAAi alkafireena waalmunafiqeena wadaAA athahum watawakkal AAala Allahi wakafa biAllahi wakeelan
And do not obey the blasphemers and the hypocrites, and ignore their insults, and rely on Allah. Allah is a sufficient protector.

O you who believe! When you marry believing women, but then divorce them before you have touched them, there is no waiting period for you to observe in respect to them; but compensate them, and release them in a graceful manner.
- 50

O Prophet! We have permitted to you your wives to whom you have given their dowries, and those you already have, as granted to you by Allah, and the daughters of your paternal uncle, and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncle, and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you, and a believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet desires to marry her, exclusively for you, and not for the believers. We know what We have ordained for them regarding their wives and those their right hands possess. This is to spare you any difficulty. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

You may defer any of them you wish, and receive any of them you wish. Should you desire any of those you had deferred, there is no blame on you. This is more proper, so that they will be comforted, and not be grieved, and be content with what you have given each one of them. Allah knows what is within your hearts. Allah is Omniscient and Clement.

Beyond that, no other women are permissible for you, nor can you exchange them for other wives, even if you admire their beauty, except those you already have. Allah is Watchful over all things.

O you who believe! Do not enter the homes of the Prophet, unless you are given permission to come for a meal; and do not wait for its preparation. And when you are invited, go in. And when you have eaten, disperse, without lingering for conversation. This irritates the Prophet, and he shies away from you, but Allah does not shy away from the truth. And when you ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a screen; that is purer for your hearts and their hearts. You must never offend the Messenger of Allah, nor must you ever marry his wives after him, for that would be an enormity with Allah.

If the hypocrites, and those with sickness in their hearts, and the rumormongers in the City, do not desist, We will incite you against them; then they will not be your neighbors there except for a short while.

MalAAooneena aynama thuqifoo okhithoo waquttiloo taqteelan
They are cursed; wherever they are found, they should be captured and killed outright.
- 62
Sunnata Allahi fee allatheena khalaw min qablu walan tajida lisunnati Allahi tabdeelan
Such has been Allah’s precedent with those who passed away before. You will find no change in Allah’s system.
- 63
Yasaluka alnnasu AAani alssaAAati qul innama AAilmuha AAinda Allahi wama yudreeka laAAalla alssaAAata takoonu qareeban
The people ask you about the Hour. Say, “The knowledge thereof rests with Allah. But what do you know? Perhaps the Hour is near.”
- 64
Inna Allaha laAAana alkafireena waaAAadda lahum saAAeeran
Allah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a Blaze.

Dwelling therein forever, not finding a protector or a savior.
- 66
Yawma tuqallabu wujoohuhum fee alnnari yaqooloona ya laytana ataAAna Allaha waataAAna alrrasoola
The Day when their faces are flipped into the Fire, they will say, “If only we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.”
- 67
Waqaloo rabbana inna ataAAna sadatana wakubaraana faadalloona alssabeela
And they will say, “Lord, we have obeyed our superiors and our dignitaries, but they led us away from the way.
- 68
Rabbana atihim diAAfayni mina alAAathabi wailAAanhum laAAnan kabeeran
Lord, give them double the punishment, and curse them with a great curse.”
- 69
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la takoonoo kaallatheena athaw moosa fabarraahu Allahu mimma qaloo wakana AAinda Allahi wajeehan
O you who believe! Do not be like those who abused Moses; but Allah cleared him of what they said. He was distinguished with Allah.
- 70
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo ittaqoo Allaha waqooloo qawlan sadeedan
O you who believe! Be conscious of Allah, and speak in a straightforward manner.
- 71
Yuslih lakum aAAmalakum wayaghfir lakum thunoobakum waman yutiAAi Allaha warasoolahu faqad faza fawzan AAatheeman
He will rectify your conduct for you, and will forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has won a great victory.
- 72
Inna AAaradna alamanata AAala alssamawati waalardi waaljibali faabayna an yahmilnaha waashfaqna minha wahamalaha alinsanu innahu kana thalooman jahoolan
We offered the Trust to the heavens, and the earth, and the mountains; but they refused to bear it, and were apprehensive of it; but the human being accepted it. He was unfair and ignorant.
- 73
