What Surah Al-A'raf is about
Al-A'raf, The Heights, is the seventh surah of the Quran and one of the longest Meccan surahs, with 206 verses. It is named after verses 46-49, which describe a barrier between Paradise and the Fire and people on its heights who recognize everyone by their features. The surah follows human history from Adam to the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, showing again and again how people respond when a messenger comes.
After a short opening that tells the Prophet ﷺ not to feel strain over the message (verse 2), the surah recalls destroyed towns and the just scales of the Day of Judgment (verses 4-9). It then tells the story of Adam in detail: Satan refuses to bow, claiming he is better because he was made of fire, vows to attack people from every side, and deceives Adam and his wife. Their prayer of repentance in verse 23 is one of the best-known du'as in the Quran. Verses 26-31 address the children of Adam about clothing, modesty and eating without excess.
Verses 59-102 follow a repeated pattern with Noah (Nuh), Hud, Salih, Lot (Lut) and Shu'ayb: each calls his people to worship Allah alone, the arrogant leaders reject him, and the people are destroyed. The longest story is that of Moses (Musa), from verse 103: his contest with Pharaoh's magicians, who believe and accept Pharaoh's threats, the plagues, the crossing of the sea, Moses's request to see Allah at the mountain (verse 143), and the golden calf.
The closing part recalls the covenant Allah took from all the descendants of Adam, when they testified that He is their Lord (verse 172). It describes the Most Beautiful Names (verse 180), and ends with instructions to the Prophet ﷺ: to forgive, encourage what is good and turn away from the ignorant (verse 199), to listen attentively when the Quran is recited (verse 204), and to remember Allah morning and evening. The final verse describes those near Allah prostrating, and is a verse of prostration.
Main themes
Adam, Satan and the first test
Satan's refusal to bow comes from pride in his origin, and he openly vows to lead people astray from every direction. Adam and his wife slip, but they admit their wrong and ask forgiveness, which shows the difference between repentance and arrogance.
Verses 11–25Addressing the children of Adam
Four times the surah calls on the children of Adam directly. It speaks of clothing as both covering and adornment, says the clothing of piety is best, warns against Satan's tricks, and tells people to dress well for worship and eat and drink without waste.
Verses 26–35The people on the Heights
Between the people of Paradise and the people of the Fire is a partition, and on its heights are people who are not yet in Paradise but hope for it. They greet the people of Paradise with peace and ask not to be placed with the wrongdoers.
Verses 46–49Messengers and their peoples
Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot and Shu'ayb each give nearly the same message and meet nearly the same reply from the powerful in their communities. The repetition makes the pattern clear, and verse 96 notes that if the towns had believed, blessings would have opened for them.
Verses 59–102Moses, Pharaoh and the Children of Israel
The story of Moses covers the magicians who become believers, the plagues on Egypt, the crossing of the sea, the forty nights at the mountain, the tablets and the calf. It ends with the promise in verse 157 of an unlettered prophet mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel.
Verses 103–171Remembrance and gentle conduct
The final verses turn inward, asking for forgiveness and patience with others, seeking refuge from Satan's whispers, listening when the Quran is recited, and remembering Allah quietly morning and evening.
Verses 199–206
Verses to know
They said, “Our Lord, we have done wrong to ourselves. Unless You forgive us, and have mercy on us, we will be among the losers.”
The prayer of Adam and his wife after their mistake, admitting they wronged themselves and asking for forgiveness and mercy. Many Muslims memorize it as a du'a of repentance.
And when Moses came to Our appointment, and his Lord spoke to him, he said, “My Lord, allow me to look and see You.” He said, “You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it stays in its place, you will see Me.” But when his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain, He turned it into dust, and Moses fell down unconscious. Then, when he recovered, he said, “Glory be to You, I repent to You, and I am the first of the believers.”
Moses asks to see Allah, the mountain crumbles when Allah manifests Himself to it, and Moses falls unconscious and then turns to Him in repentance. It is one of the most striking scenes in the surah.
“And inscribe for us goodness in this world, and in the Hereafter. We have turned to You.” He said, “My punishment—I inflict it upon whomever I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. I will specify it for those who act righteously and practice regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs.”
In answer to Moses's prayer, Allah says His mercy encompasses all things. The phrase is among the most quoted descriptions of Allah's mercy in the Quran.
And when your Lord summoned the descendants of Adam, and made them testify about themselves. “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we testify.” Thus you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, “We were unaware of this.”
It describes the covenant in which all the descendants of Adam testified that Allah is their Lord, often understood as the basis of a natural awareness of Allah in every person.
When Surah Al-A'raf is recited
There is no widely established practice of reciting Al-A'raf at particular times. Its last verse, 206, is a verse of prostration, so those reciting it customarily prostrate on reaching it. Sahih al-Bukhari reports that the Prophet ﷺ sometimes recited a very long surah in the sunset (Maghrib) prayer, and a narration in Sunan an-Nasa'i identifies it as Al-A'raf, divided over the two units.

So he lured them with deceit. And when they tasted the tree, their nakedness became evident to them, and they began covering themselves with the leaves of the Garden. And their Lord called out to them, “Did I not forbid you from this tree, and say to you that Satan is a sworn enemy to you?”

O Children of Adam! Do not let Satan seduce you, as he drove your parents out of the Garden, stripping them of their garments, to show them their nakedness. He sees you, him and his clan, from where you cannot see them. We have made the devils friends of those who do not believe.

Say, “My Lord has forbidden immoralities—both open and secret—and sin, and unjustified aggression, and that you associate with Allah anything for which He revealed no sanction, and that you say about Allah what you do not know.”

Who does greater wrong than he who invents lies about Allah, or denies His revelations? These—their share of the decree will reach them. Until, when Our envoys come to them, to take their souls away, they will say, “Where are they whom you used to pray to besides Allah?” They will say, “They have abandoned us,” and they will testify against themselves that they were faithless.

He will say, “Join the crowds of jinn and humans who have gone into the Fire before you.” Every time a crowd enters, it will curse its sister-crowd. Until, when they are all in it, the last of them will say to the first of them, “Our Lord, these are the ones who misled us, so inflict on them a double punishment in the Fire.” He will say, “Each will have a double, but you do not know.”

Those who reject Our revelations and are too arrogant to uphold them—the doors of Heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise, until the camel passes through the eye of the needle. Thus We repay the guilty.

Are they waiting for anything but its fulfillment? The Day its fulfillment comes true, those who disregarded it before will say, “The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth. Have we any intercessors to intercede for us? Or, could we be sent back, to behave differently from the way we behaved before?” They ruined their souls, and what they used to invent has failed them.

Your Lord is Allah; He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself on the Throne. The night overtakes the day, as it pursues it persistently; and the sun, and the moon, and the stars are subservient by His command. His is the creation, and His is the command. Blessed is Allah, Lord of all beings.

It is He who sends the wind ahead of His mercy. Then, when they have gathered up heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land, where We make water come down, and with it We bring out all kinds of fruits. Thus We bring out the dead—perhaps you will reflect.

Those who follow the Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel in their possession. He directs them to righteousness, and deters them from evil, and allows for them all good things, and prohibits for them wickedness, and unloads the burdens and the shackles that are upon them. Those who believe in him, and respect him, and support him, and follow the light that came down with him—these are the successful.

Have they not observed the government of the heavens and the earth, and all the things that Allah created, and that their time may have drawn near? Which message, besides this, will they believe in?

They ask you about the Hour, “When will it come?” Say, “Knowledge of it rests with my Lord. None can reveal its coming except He. It weighs heavily on the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except suddenly.” They ask you as if you are responsible for it. Say, “Knowledge of it rests with Allah,” but most people do not know.

Say, “I have no control over any benefit or harm to myself, except as Allah wills. Had I known the future, I would have acquired much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am only a warner, and a herald of good news to a people who believe.”

It is He who created you from a single person, and made from it its mate, that he may find comfort with her. Then, when he has covered her, she conceives a light load, and she carries it around. But when she has grown heavy, they pray to Allah their Lord, “If You give us a good child, we will be among the thankful.”
- 190

Do they have feet with which they walk? Or do they have hands with which they strike? Or do they have eyes with which they see? Or do they have ears with which they hear? Say, “Call upon your partners, then plot against me, and do not wait.”
