What Surah Al-Hashr is about

Al-Hashr is the 59th surah of the Quran, revealed in Medina, with 24 verses. Its name means the gathering or the exile, taken from verse 2. According to Abdullah ibn Abbas, it was revealed about the Jewish tribe of Banu an-Nadir, who left Medina after a siege, and in Sahih al-Bukhari he is reported to have preferred calling it the Surah of an-Nadir. Like Al-Hadid before it, it opens with all creation glorifying Allah.

Verses 2 to 5 describe the tribe leaving their fortified homes, which they had expected to protect them, and say the believers did not expect them to go either. Verses 6 to 10 explain how the property left behind was to be shared: with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, relatives, orphans, the poor and travelers, so that wealth does not only circulate among the rich. Here the surah praises three groups in turn. Verse 8 praises the emigrants who lost their homes, verse 9 praises the people of Medina who welcomed them and put them first even when they themselves were in need, and verse 10 gives a prayer for those who came later, asking forgiveness for the believers before them and asking that no resentment be left in their hearts.

Verses 11 to 17 turn to the hypocrites who promised the tribe support and then abandoned them, comparing them to Satan, who urges a person to disbelieve and then disowns him. Verses 18 to 20 ask every soul to look at what it has sent ahead for tomorrow and not to forget Allah. Verse 21 says that if this Quran had been sent down on a mountain, the mountain would have humbled itself and split apart in awe. The surah closes in verses 22 to 24 with a long sequence of Allah's names, among the most recited passages in the Quran.

Main themes

  1. The exile of Banu an-Nadir

The opening verses describe a people who trusted their fortresses and were reached by Allah from where they did not expect. They pulled down their own houses as they left, and the passage ends by asking those with insight to take a lesson from it.

    Verses 2–5
  2. Sharing wealth fairly

Verse 7 lists who should receive the property gained without fighting, and gives the reason: so that wealth does not circulate only among the wealthy. It also tells believers to accept what the Messenger gives them and leave what he forbids.

    Verses 6–7
  3. Emigrants, helpers and those who follow

Verses 8 to 10 praise the emigrants who left everything, the helpers of Medina who preferred them over themselves, and later believers who pray for the earlier ones without resentment. Verse 9 describes those protected from their own greed as the successful.

    Verses 8–10
  4. Considering what you send ahead

Verse 18 asks each person to think about what they have prepared for tomorrow, and verse 19 warns against forgetting Allah, which leads people to forget their own selves.

    Verses 18–21
  5. The names of Allah

The final three verses each begin by naming Him and then list His names: the Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Sovereign, the Holy, the Source of Peace, the Creator, the Shaper, and more. Verse 24 says the most beautiful names belong to Him.

    Verses 22–24

Verses to know

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed—it is they who are the successful.
Al-Hashr 59:9

This verse praises the people of Medina for loving those who came to them and putting them first even in their own need. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that it was revealed about a man from the Ansar who fed a hungry guest of the Prophet ﷺ while his own family went without.

And those who came after them, saying, “Our Lord, forgive us, and our brethren who preceded us in faith, and leave no malice in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are Clement and Merciful.”
Al-Hashr 59:10

A short prayer for later generations: forgiveness for the believers who came before, and a heart free of resentment toward any believer.

Had We sent this Quran down on a mountain, you would have seen it trembling, crumbling in awe of Allah. These parables We cite for the people, so that they may reflect.
Al-Hashr 59:21

A striking image of the weight of the Quran. A mountain would humble itself and crack in awe if the Quran were sent down on it, and people are asked to reflect on that.

22He is Allah. There is no god but He, the Knower of secrets and declarations. He is the Compassionate, the Merciful. 23He is Allah; besides whom there is no god; the Sovereign, the Holy, the Peace-Giver, the Faith-Giver, the Overseer, the Almighty, the Omnipotent, the Overwhelming. Glory be to Allah, beyond what they associate. 24He is Allah; the Creator, the Maker, the Designer. His are the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him. He is the Majestic, the Wise.
Al-Hashr 59:22–24

The last three verses of Al-Hashr gather more of Allah's names than almost any other single passage, which is why many Muslims memorize and recite them.

When Surah Al-Hashr is recited

Many Muslims memorize and recite the last three verses of Al-Hashr because of the names of Allah they contain. A narration in Sunan at-Tirmidhi promising a specific reward for reciting them in the morning and evening is popular, but at-Tirmidhi himself described it as gharib and scholars have graded its chain weak, so the practice rests on the beauty of the verses rather than on that report.

Sabbaha lillahi ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi wahuwa alAAazeezu alhakeemu

Glorifying Allah is all that exists in the heavens and the earth. He is the Almighty, the Most Wise.

  2. 2

Huwa allathee akhraja allatheena kafaroo min ahli alkitabi min diyarihim liawwali alhashri ma thanantum an yakhrujoo wathannoo annahum maniAAatuhum husoonuhum mina Allahi faatahumu Allahu min haythu lam yahtasiboo waqathafa fee quloobihimu alrruAAba yukhriboona buyootahum biaydeehim waaydee almumineena faiAAtabiroo ya olee alabsari

It is He who evicted those who disbelieved among the People of the Book from their homes at the first mobilization. You did not think they would leave, and they thought their fortresses would protect them from Allah. But Allah came at them from where they never expected, and threw terror into their hearts. They wrecked their homes with their own hands, and by the hands of the believers. Therefore, take a lesson, O you who have insight.

  3. 3

Walawla an kataba Allahu AAalayhimu aljalaa laAAaththabahum fee alddunya walahum fee alakhirati AAathabu alnnari

Had Allah not decreed exile for them, He would have punished them in this life. But in the Hereafter they will have the punishment of the Fire.

  4. 4

Thalika biannahum shaqqoo Allaha warasoolahu waman yushaqqi Allaha fainna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabi

That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. Whoever opposes Allah—Allah is stern in retribution.

  5. 5

Ma qataAAtum min leenatin aw taraktumooha qaimatan AAala osooliha fabiithni Allahi waliyukhziya alfasiqeena

Whether you cut down a tree, or leave it standing on its trunk, it is by Allah’s will. He will surely disgrace the sinners.

  6. 6

Wama afaa Allahu AAala rasoolihi minhum fama awjaftum AAalayhi min khaylin wala rikabin walakinna Allaha yusallitu rusulahu AAala man yashao waAllahu AAala kulli shayin qadeerun

Whatever Allah has bestowed upon His Messenger from them; you spurred neither horse nor camel for them, but Allah gives authority to His messengers over whomever He wills. Allah is Able to do all things.

  7. 7

Ma afaa Allahu AAala rasoolihi min ahli alqura falillahi walilrrasooli walithee alqurba waalyatama waalmasakeeni waibni alssabeeli kay la yakoona doolatan bayna alaghniyai minkum wama atakumu alrrasoolu fakhuthoohu wama nahakum AAanhu faintahoo waittaqoo Allaha inna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabi

Whatever Allah restored to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belongs to Allah, and to the Messenger, and to the relatives, and to the orphans, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer; so that it may not circulate solely between the wealthy among you. Whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it. And fear Allah. Allah is severe in punishment.

  8. 8

Lilfuqarai almuhajireena allatheena okhrijoo min diyarihim waamwalihim yabtaghoona fadlan mina Allahi waridwanan wayansuroona Allaha warasoolahu olaika humu alssadiqoona

To the poor refugees who were driven out of their homes and their possessions, as they sought the favor of Allah and His approval, and came to the aid of Allah and His Messenger. These are the sincere.

  9. 9

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed—it is they who are the successful.

  10. 10

Waallatheena jaoo min baAAdihim yaqooloona rabbana ighfir lana waliikhwanina allatheena sabaqoona bialeemani wala tajAAal fee quloobina ghillan lillatheena amanoo rabbana innaka raoofun raheemun

And those who came after them, saying, “Our Lord, forgive us, and our brethren who preceded us in faith, and leave no malice in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are Clement and Merciful.”

  11. 11

Alam tara ila allatheena nafaqoo yaqooloona liikhwanihimu allatheena kafaroo min ahli alkitabi lain okhrijtum lanakhrujanna maAAakum wala nuteeAAu feekum ahadan abadan wain qootiltum lanansurannakum waAllahu yashhadu innahum lakathiboona

Have you not considered those who act hypocritically? They say to their brethren who disbelieved among the People of the Book, “If you are evicted, we will leave with you, and will not obey anyone against you; and should anyone fight you, we will certainly support you.” But Allah bears witness that they are liars.

  12. 12

Lain okhrijoo la yakhrujoona maAAahum walain qootiloo la yansuroonahum walain nasaroohum layuwallunna aladbara thumma la yunsaroona

If they are evicted, they will not leave with them; and if anyone fights them, they will not support them; and if they go to their aid, they will turn their backs and flee; then they will receive no support.

  13. 13

Laantum ashaddu rahbatan fee sudoorihim mina Allahi thalika biannahum qawmun la yafqahoona

Fear of you is more intense in their hearts than fear of Allah. That is because they are a people who do not understand.

  14. 14

La yuqatiloonakum jameeAAan illa fee quran muhassanatin aw min warai judurin basuhum baynahum shadeedun tahsabuhum jameeAAan waquloobuhum shatta thalika biannahum qawmun la yaAAqiloona

They will not fight you all together except from fortified strongholds, or from behind walls. Their hostility towards each other is severe. You would think they are united, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not understand.

  15. 15

Kamathali allatheena min qablihim qareeban thaqoo wabala amrihim walahum AAathabun aleemun

Like those shortly before them. They experienced the consequences of their decisions. For them is a painful punishment.

  16. 16

Kamathali alshshaytani ith qala lilinsani okfur falamma kafara qala innee bareeon minka innee akhafu Allaha rabba alAAalameena

Like the devil, when he says to the human being, “Disbelieve.” But when he has disbelieved, he says, “I am innocent of you; I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.”

  17. 17

Fakana AAaqibatahuma annahuma fee alnnari khalidayni feeha wathalika jazao alththalimeena

The ultimate end for both of them is the Fire, where they will dwell forever. Such is the requital for the wrongdoers.

  18. 18

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo ittaqoo Allaha waltanthur nafsun ma qaddamat lighadin waittaqoo Allaha inna Allaha khabeerun bima taAAmaloona

O you who believe! Fear Allah, and let every soul consider what it has forwarded for the morrow, and fear Allah. Allah is Aware of what you do.

  19. 19

Wala takoonoo kaallatheena nasoo Allaha faansahum anfusahum olaika humu alfasiqoona

And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. These are the sinners.

  20. 20

La yastawee ashabu alnnari waashabu aljannati ashabu aljannati humu alfaizoona

Not equal are the inhabitants of the Fire and the inhabitants of Paradise. It is the inhabitants of Paradise who are the winners.

  21. 21

Law anzalna hatha alqurana AAala jabalin laraaytahu khashiAAan mutasaddiAAan min khashyati Allahi watilka alamthalu nadribuha lilnnasi laAAallahum yatafakkaroona

Had We sent this Quran down on a mountain, you would have seen it trembling, crumbling in awe of Allah. These parables We cite for the people, so that they may reflect.

  22. 22

Huwa Allahu allathee la ilaha illa huwa AAalimu alghaybi waalshshahadati huwa alrrahmanu alrraheemu

He is Allah. There is no god but He, the Knower of secrets and declarations. He is the Compassionate, the Merciful.

  23. 23
