What Surah Al-Hijr is about

Surah Al-Hijr is the fifteenth surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 99 verses that opens the fourteenth juz. Its name comes from verse 80, which mentions the people of al-Hijr, a rocky region in northwestern Arabia traditionally identified with the people of Thamud. Verse 82 recalls how they carved homes in the mountains and felt safe in them. The verses of this surah are short, and much of it is a steady reassurance to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the face of mockery.

It opens with Alif, Lam, Ra and a warning to those who are absorbed in enjoyment and false hopes (verses 1-3). When the deniers call the Prophet ﷺ insane and ask for angels (verses 6-7), verse 9 answers that Allah sent down the Reminder and will Himself preserve it. Verses 16-25 describe the constellations, the earth with its balanced growth, the winds that fertilize and the rain Allah stores. Verses 26-44 then tell the creation of the human being from clay, the angels' prostration, and Iblis's refusal, his request for respite and his vow to mislead people, along with Allah's answer that he has no authority over His sincere servants.

After a description of the peace of Paradise (verses 45-48) and the pairing of Allah's forgiveness with His punishment (verses 49-50), the surah tells of Abraham's guests, who bring news of a son and then go on to Lot (verses 51-77), and briefly mentions the people of the Woods and the people of al-Hijr (verses 78-84). The final passage speaks directly to the Prophet ﷺ: he has been given the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Quran (verse 87), he should forgive graciously, be gentle with the believers, proclaim the message openly, and worship his Lord until certainty comes (verses 85-99).

Main themes

  1. The Quran will be preserved

Answering those who mock the Prophet ﷺ and demand angels, verse 9 states that Allah Himself sent down the Reminder and will guard it. Muslims often cite this verse when speaking of the Quran's preservation.

    Verses 6–9
  2. Measured creation

The surah describes the stars made beautiful and guarded, the earth spread with everything grown in proportion, and the stores of all things held with Allah and sent down in a known measure. The winds and the rain are presented as provision people cannot store themselves.

    Verses 16–25
  3. Adam and the refusal of Iblis

Allah announces the creation of a human from clay and commands the angels to bow once He breathes His spirit into him. Iblis refuses out of pride, is granted respite until the appointed Day, and vows to make wrong look attractive, but is told he has no power over Allah's sincere servants.

    Verses 26–44
  4. Mercy before warning

Verses 49-50 tell the Prophet ﷺ to inform people that Allah is the Forgiving, the Merciful, and that His punishment is painful. The story that follows begins with Abraham, who says only those who are lost despair of their Lord's mercy.

    Verses 49–56
  5. Comfort for the Prophet

The surah ends by acknowledging that the Prophet's heart was strained by what people said. He is told to glorify his Lord, be among those who prostrate, and keep worshipping until certainty, understood as death, comes.

    Verses 94–99

Verses to know

Surely We revealed the Message, and We will surely preserve it.
Al-Hijr 15:9

This is the verse most often cited for the belief that Allah has taken it upon Himself to preserve the Quran.

He said, “And who despairs of his Lord’s mercy but the lost?”
Al-Hijr 15:56

Abraham's remark that only those who have gone astray despair of their Lord's mercy is a short reminder often shared with people who feel hopeless.

We have given you seven of the pairs, and the Grand Quran.
Al-Hijr 15:87

The seven oft-repeated verses mentioned here are identified in a narration in Sahih al-Bukhari with Surah Al-Fatihah.

97We are aware that your heart is strained by what they say. 98So glorify the praise of your Lord, and be among those who bow down. 99And worship your Lord in order to attain certainty.
Al-Hijr 15:97–99

An acknowledgment of the Prophet's distress followed by a simple remedy: praise, prostration and worship until the end of life.

And they said, “O you who received the message, you are insane.”

  7. 7

“Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are truthful?”

  8. 8

Ma nunazzilu almalaikata illa bialhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareena

We do not send the angels down except with reason, and they will not be held back.

  9. 9

Inna nahnu nazzalna alththikra wainna lahu lahafithoona

Surely We revealed the Message, and We will surely preserve it.

  10. 10

Walaqad arsalna min qablika fee shiyaAAi alawwaleena

We sent others before you, to the former communities.

  11. 11

Wama yateehim min rasoolin illa kanoo bihi yastahzioona

But no messenger came to them, but they ridiculed him.

  12. 12

Thus We slip it into the hearts of the guilty.

  13. 13

They do not believe in it, though the ways of the ancients have passed away.

Walaw fatahna AAalayhim baban mina alssamai fathalloo feehi yaAArujoona

Even if We opened for them a gateway into the sky, and they began to ascend through it.

  15. 15

They would still say, “Our eyes are hallucinating; in fact, we are people bewitched.”

  16. 16

We placed constellations in the sky, and made them beautiful to the beholders.

  17. 17

Except one who steals a hearing, and is followed by a visible projectile.

  19. 19

Waalarda madadnaha waalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatna feeha min kulli shayin mawzoonin

We spread the earth, and placed stabilizers in it, and in it We grew all things in proper measure.

WajaAAalna lakum feeha maAAayisha waman lastum lahu biraziqeena

And in it We created livelihoods for you, and for those for whom you are not the providers.

  21. 21

Wain min shayin illa AAindana khazainuhu wama nunazziluhu illa biqadarin maAAloomin

There is not a thing but with Us are its stores, and We send it down only in precise measure.

  22. 22

Waarsalna alrriyaha lawaqiha faanzalna mina alssamai maan faasqaynakumoohu wama antum lahu bikhazineena

We send the fertilizing winds; and send down water from the sky, and give it to you to drink, and you are not the ones who store it.

And the jinn We created before, from piercing fire.

  28. 28

    Qala innakum qawmun munkaroona

He said, “You are a people unknown to me.”

  63. 63

Qaloo bal jinaka bima kanoo feehi yamtaroona

They said, “We bring you what they have doubts about.”

  64. 64

    Waataynaka bialhaqqi wainna lasadiqoona

“We bring you the truth, and we are truthful.”

  65. 65

Faasri biahlika biqitAAin mina allayli waittabiAA adbarahum wala yaltafit minkum ahadun waimdoo haythu tumaroona

“Travel with your family at the dead of the night, and follow up behind them, and let none of you look back, and proceed as commanded.”

  66. 66

Waqadayna ilayhi thalika alamra anna dabira haolai maqtooAAun musbiheena

And We informed him of Our decree: the last remnant of these will be uprooted by early morning.

  67. 67

    Wajaa ahlu almadeenati yastabshiroona

And the people of the town came joyfully.

  68. 68

Qala inna haolai dayfee fala tafdahooni

He said, “These are my guests, so do not embarrass me.”

  69. 69

    Waittaqoo Allaha wala tukhzooni

“And fear Allah, and do not disgrace me.”

  70. 70

    Qaloo awalam nanhaka AAani alAAalameena

They said, “Did we not forbid you from strangers?”

  71. 71

Qala haolai banatee in kuntum faAAileena

He said, “These are my daughters, if you must.”

  72. 72

    LaAAamruka innahum lafee sakratihim yaAAmahoona

By your life, they were blundering in their drunkenness.

  73. 73

    Faakhathathumu alssayhatu mushriqeena

So the Blast struck them at sunrise.

  74. 74

FajaAAalna AAaliyaha safilaha waamtarna AAalayhim hijaratan min sijjeelin

And We turned it upside down, and rained down upon them stones of baked clay.

  75. 75

    Inna fee thalika laayatin lilmutawassimeena

Surely in that are lessons for those who read signs.

  76. 76

    Wainnaha labisabeelin muqeemin

And it is on an existing road.

  77. 77

    Inna fee thalika laayatan lilmumineena

Surely in that is a sign for the believers.

  78. 78

    Wain kana ashabu alaykati lathalimeena

The people of the Woods were also wrongdoers.

  79. 79

    Faintaqamna minhum wainnahuma labiimamin mubeenin

So We took revenge upon them. Both are clearly documented.

  80. 80

    Walaqad kaththaba ashabu alhijri almursaleena

The people of the Rock also rejected the messengers.

  81. 81

    Waataynahum ayatina fakanoo AAanha muAArideena

We gave them Our revelations, but they turned away from them.

  82. 82

Wakanoo yanhitoona mina aljibali buyootan amineena

They used to carve homes in the mountains, feeling secure.

  83. 83

    Faakhathathumu alssayhatu musbiheena

But the Blast struck them in the morning.

  84. 84

Fama aghna AAanhum ma kanoo yaksiboona

All they had acquired was of no avail to them.

  85. 85

Wama khalaqna alssamawati waalarda wama baynahuma illa bialhaqqi wainna alssaAAata laatiyatun faisfahi alssafha aljameela

We did not create the heavens and the earth, and what lies between them, except with truth. The Hour is coming, so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

  86. 86

    Inna rabbaka huwa alkhallaqu alAAaleemu

Your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator.

  87. 87

Walaqad ataynaka sabAAan mina almathanee waalqurana alAAatheema

We have given you seven of the pairs, and the Grand Quran.

  88. 88

La tamuddanna AAaynayka ila ma mattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum wala tahzan AAalayhim waikhfid janahaka lilmumineena

Do not extend your eyes towards what We have bestowed on some couples of them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them, and lower your wing to the believers.

  89. 89

    Waqul innee ana alnnatheeru almubeenu

And say, “I am the clear warner.”

  90. 90

    Kama anzalna AAala almuqtasimeena

Just as We sent down to the separatists.

  91. 91

    Allatheena jaAAaloo alqurana AAideena

Those who made the Quran obsolete.

  92. 92

    Fawarabbika lanasalannahum ajmaAAeena

By your Lord, We will question them all.

  93. 93

    AAamma kanoo yaAAmaloona

About what they used to do.

  94. 94

FaisdaAA bima tumaru waaAArid AAani almushrikeena

So proclaim openly what you are commanded, and turn away from the polytheists.

  95. 95

    Inna kafaynaka almustahzieena

We are enough for you against the mockers.

  96. 96

Allatheena yajAAaloona maAAa Allahi ilahan akhara fasawfa yaAAlamoona

Those who set up another god with Allah. They will come to know.

  97. 97

Walaqad naAAlamu annaka yadeequ sadruka bima yaqooloona

We are aware that your heart is strained by what they say.

  98. 98

Fasabbih bihamdi rabbika wakun mina alssajideena

So glorify the praise of your Lord, and be among those who bow down.

  99. 99

    WaoAAbud rabbaka hatta yatiyaka alyaqeenu

And worship your Lord in order to attain certainty.
