What Surah Ash-Shu'ara is about
Ash-Shu'ara, The Poets, is the 26th surah of the Quran and, at 227 verses, one of its longest Meccan surahs. It lies entirely within juz 19. It is named after verses 224 to 227 near the end, which contrast poets who wander in every valley and say what they do not do with those who believe and remember Allah.
The surah opens with the letters Ta, Seen, Meem and then speaks directly to the Prophet ﷺ, who is grieving so much over his people's rejection that it could almost destroy him (3). From there it tells seven stories of earlier messengers. The longest is Moses (Musa), from his call to go to Pharaoh, through his debate with Pharaoh about the Lord of the worlds (23 to 28), the contest with the magicians who then believe (38 to 51), and the parting of the sea (61 to 66). Then comes Abraham (Ibrahim), who describes his Lord as the one who created him, guides him, feeds him and heals him when he is sick (78 to 82), and prays not to be disgraced on the Day when only a sound heart will help (87 to 89).
After that the stories become shorter and follow a clear pattern. Noah (Nuh), Hud, Salih, Lot (Lut) and Shuaib each tell their people to fear Allah and obey them, each says he asks for no payment, and each is rejected. Every story, including those of Moses and Abraham, ends with the same two verses: there is a sign in this, though most do not believe, and your Lord is the Almighty, the Merciful (for example 8 to 9, 67 to 68, 190 to 191).
The final section (192 to 227) returns to the Quran itself. It was brought down by the trustworthy Spirit onto the Prophet's heart in clear Arabic (193 to 195), it is not the work of devils (210 to 212), and the Prophet is told to warn his closest relatives and to be gentle with the believers who follow him (214 to 215).
Main themes
Comfort for a grieving Prophet
The opening verses address the Prophet ﷺ's sorrow that his people would not believe. Allah reminds him that He could force them to submit with a sign, but that most have chosen to turn away.
Verses 1–9Moses before Pharaoh
Moses and Aaron confront Pharaoh, who reminds Moses that he was raised in his palace. The magicians, brought to defeat Moses, end up prostrating and believing, and refuse to back down even under threat. When the Israelites are trapped at the sea, Moses says his Lord is with him, and the sea parts.
Verses 10–68Abraham's description of his Lord
Abraham asks his people what their idols can do for them, then describes his own Lord in personal terms: the one who created, guides, feeds, gives drink, heals, gives death and life, and forgives. His prayer ends with the Day when wealth and children are of no use, except to one who comes with a sound heart.
Verses 69–104Five messengers, one message
Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot and Shuaib all use nearly the same words with their people, asking for no wage and calling them to fear Allah. Each people is criticized for something specific: arrogance about followers, vain monuments, the she-camel, Lot's people's conduct, and cheating in weights and measures.
Verses 105–191The Quran's origin and the poets
The surah ends by saying the Quran came down with the trustworthy Spirit, in clear Arabic, and is not the inspiration of devils. It contrasts the Prophet with poets who say what they do not do, while excepting poets who believe and do good.

Verses to know
قَالَ كَلَّآۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهۡدِينِ ﴿٦٢﴾
He said, “No; my Lord is with me, He will guide me.”
Trapped between Pharaoh's army and the sea, Moses tells his frightened people that his Lord is with him and will guide him. It is often recalled as an example of trust in Allah.
78He who created me, and guides me. 79He who feeds me, and waters me. 80And when I get sick, He heals me. 81He who makes me die, and then revives me. 82He who, I hope, will forgive my sins on the Day of the Reckoning.”
Abraham's description of his Lord is personal and specific, covering creation, guidance, food, healing, death and forgiveness. Verse 80, about Allah healing him when he falls ill, is especially well known.
88The Day when neither wealth nor children will help. 89Except for him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”
These verses describe the Day when neither wealth nor children help, except for one who comes to Allah with a sound heart, a phrase often used to describe what really matters.
214And warn your close relatives. 215And lower your wing to those of the believers who follow you.
The Prophet ﷺ is told to warn his nearest relatives and to lower his wing, meaning to be gentle, toward the believers who follow him.
