What Surah Ghafir is about
Surah Ghafir is the 40th surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 85 verses. It is also widely known as Surah Al-Mu'min, "The Believer", after the believing man in Pharaoh's family whose speech fills its middle. Its name Ghafir, "Forgiver", comes from verse 3, which describes Allah as Forgiver of sins and Accepter of repentance. It is the first of seven consecutive surahs that open with the letters Ha Meem (40 to 46).
After the opening, verses 7-9 describe the angels who carry the Throne praying for believers: asking forgiveness for them, and asking that their righteous parents, spouses and children be admitted with them into Paradise. Verse 16 pictures the Day when everything is exposed and the question is asked of who owns the kingdom that day, answered with Allah, the One, the Irresistible.
From verse 23 the surah tells of Moses (Musa) sent to Pharaoh, Haman and Qarun. When Pharaoh proposes to kill Moses, a believing man from Pharaoh's own family who had hidden his faith speaks up (40:28). Across verses 28-44 he reasons with his people, warns them of the fate of earlier nations, reminds them that this world is brief and the Hereafter lasting, and finally entrusts his affair to Allah. Allah protects him, and Pharaoh's people are exposed to the Fire (40:45-46).
The last third turns to the Prophet ﷺ, telling him twice to be patient because Allah's promise is true (40:55 and 40:77). Verse 60 contains the well-known promise: call on Me and I will answer you. The surah points to night and day, the earth and sky, and the stages of human life from dust to old age (40:61-68), and ends with nations who believed only once they saw the punishment, when belief could no longer help them (40:84-85).
Main themes
Forgiver of sins
The surah introduces Allah as Forgiver of sins, Accepter of repentance, and severe in punishment. The angels around the Throne then pray for the forgiveness of believers and their families, a picture of mercy at the very start.
Verses 1–9The Day of Encounter
The surah describes a Day when nothing is hidden, hearts rise into throats, and there is no friend or intercessor for wrongdoers. Allah knows the betrayal of the eyes and what hearts conceal, and He judges with full justice.
Verses 15–20The believer in Pharaoh's household
A man who had concealed his faith asks his people whether they would kill someone for saying his Lord is Allah. He argues calmly, reminds them of Joseph (Yusuf), and calls them to salvation while they call him to the Fire. He hands his affair over to Allah, who protects him.
Verses 28–45Patience and prayer
The Prophet ﷺ is told to be patient, to seek forgiveness, and to glorify his Lord morning and evening. Verse 60 assures people that Allah answers those who call on Him, and warns those too proud to worship.
Verses 55–60Belief that comes too late
The surah ends with earlier nations who were proud of their own knowledge and mocked their messengers. When they saw Allah's punishment they declared belief, but faith at that moment no longer benefited them.
Verses 82–85

7Those who carry the Throne, and those around it, glorify their Lord with praise, and believe in Him, and ask for forgiveness for those who believe: “Our Lord, You have encompassed everything in mercy and knowledge; so forgive those who repent and follow Your path, and protect them from the agony of the Blaze. 8And admit them, our Lord, into the Gardens of Eternity, which You have promised them, and the righteous among their parents, and their spouses, and their offspring. You are indeed the Almighty, the Most Wise.
The angels who carry the Throne pray for the believers and for their righteous parents, spouses and children. It shows that believers are prayed for by beings they will never see.
A believing man from Pharaoh’s family, who had concealed his faith, said, “Are you going to kill a man for saying, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ and he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is a liar, his lying will rebound upon him; but if he is truthful, then some of what he promises you will befall you. Allah does not guide the extravagant imposter.
A single man inside Pharaoh's court speaks up for Moses, with careful and reasonable words. The surah's alternative name, Al-Mu'min, comes from him.
You will remember what I am telling you, so I commit my case to Allah. Allah is Observant of the servants.”
Having said all he can, the believer entrusts his affair to Allah. Many Muslims repeat his words as a personal supplication in difficult times.
Your Lord has said, “Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell forcibly.”
Allah's direct promise to respond to those who call on Him. It is one of the most quoted verses about the importance of du'a.

Joseph had come to you with clear revelations, but you continued to doubt what he came to you with. Until, when he perished, you said, “Allah will never send a messenger after him.” Thus Allah leads astray the outrageous skeptic.
- 35
Allatheena yujadiloona fee ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahum kabura maqtan AAinda Allahi waAAinda allatheena amanoo kathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAala kulli qalbi mutakabbirin jabbarin
Those who argue against Allah’s revelations, without any proof having come to them—a heinous sin in the sight of Allah, and of those who believe. Thus Allah seals the heart of every proud bully.
- 36
Waqala firAAawnu ya hamanu ibni lee sarhan laAAallee ablughu alasbaba
And Pharaoh said, “O Hamaan, build me a tower, that I may reach the pathways.
- 37

The pathways of the heavens, so that I may glance at the God of Moses; though I think he is lying.” Thus Pharaoh’s evil deeds were made to appear good to him, and he was averted from the path. Pharaoh’s guile was only in defeat.
- 38
Waqala allathee amana ya qawmi ittabiAAooni ahdikum sabeela alrrashadi
The one who had believed said, “O my people, follow me, and I will guide you to the path of rectitude.”
- 39
Ya qawmi innama hathihi alhayatu alddunya mataAAun wainna alakhirata hiya daru alqarari
“O my people, the life of this world is nothing but fleeting enjoyment, but the Hereafter is the Home of Permanence.
- 40
Man AAamila sayyiatan fala yujza illa mithlaha waman AAamila salihan min thakarin aw ontha wahuwa muminun faolaika yadkhuloona aljannata yurzaqoona feeha bighayri hisabin
Whoever commits a sin will be repaid only with its like. But whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, and is a believer—these will enter Paradise, where they will be provided for without account.
- 41
Waya qawmi ma lee adAAookum ila alnnajati watadAAoonanee ila alnnari
O my people, how is it that I call you to salvation, and you call me to the Fire?
- 42
TadAAoonanee liakfura biAllahi waoshrika bihi ma laysa lee bihi AAilmun waana adAAookum ila alAAazeezi alghaffari
You call me to reject Allah, and to associate with Him what I have no knowledge of, while I call you to the Mighty Forgiver.
- 43
La jarama annama tadAAoonanee ilayhi laysa lahu daAAwatun fee alddunya wala fee alakhirati waanna maraddana ila Allahi waanna almusrifeena hum ashabu alnnari
Without a doubt, what you call me to has no say in this world, or in the Hereafter; and our turning back is to Allah; and the transgressors are the inmates of the Fire.
- 44
Fasatathkuroona ma aqoolu lakum waofawwidu amree ila Allahi inna Allaha baseerun bialAAibadi
You will remember what I am telling you, so I commit my case to Allah. Allah is Observant of the servants.”
- 45
Fawaqahu Allahu sayyiati ma makaroo wahaqa biali firAAawna sooo alAAathabi
So Allah protected him from the evils of their scheming, while a terrible torment besieged Pharaoh’s clan.
- 46
Alnnaru yuAAradoona AAalayha ghuduwwan waAAashiyyan wayawma taqoomu alssaAAatu adkhiloo ala firAAawna ashadda alAAathabi
The Fire. They will be exposed to it morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour takes place: “Admit the clan of Pharaoh to the most intense agony.”
- 47
Waith yatahajjoona fee alnnari fayaqoolu aldduAAafao lillatheena istakbaroo inna kunna lakum tabaAAan fahal antum mughnoona AAanna naseeban mina alnnari
As they quarrel in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant, “We were followers of yours; will you then spare us a portion of the Fire?”
- 48
Qala allatheena istakbaroo inna kullun feeha inna Allaha qad hakama bayna alAAibadi
Those who were arrogant will say, “We are all in it; Allah has judged between the servants.”
- 49
Waqala allatheena fee alnnari likhazanati jahannama odAAoo rabbakum yukhaffif AAanna yawman mina alAAathabi
And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, “Call to your Lord to lessen our suffering for one day.”
- 50
Qaloo awalam taku tateekum rusulukum bialbayyinati qaloo bala qaloo faodAAoo wama duAAao alkafireena illa fee dalalin
They will say, “Did not your messengers come to you with clear signs?” They will say, “Yes.” They will say, “Then pray, but the prayers of the disbelievers will always be in vain.”
- 51
Inna lanansuru rusulana waallatheena amanoo fee alhayati alddunya wayawma yaqoomu alashhadu
Most surely We will support Our messengers and those who believe, in this life, and on the Day the witnesses arise.
- 52
Yawma la yanfaAAu alththalimeena maAAthiratuhum walahumu allaAAnatu walahum sooo alddari
The Day when their excuses will not profit the wrongdoers, and the curse will be upon them, and they will have the Home of Misery.
- 53
Walaqad atayna moosa alhuda waawrathna banee israeela alkitaba
We gave Moses guidance, and made the Children of Israel inherit the Scripture.
- 54
Hudan wathikra liolee alalbabi
A guide and a reminder for those endowed with reason.
- 55
Faisbir inna waAAda Allahi haqqun waistaghfir lithanbika wasabbih bihamdi rabbika bialAAashiyyi waalibkari
So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for your sin, and proclaim the praise of your Lord evening and morning.
- 56
Inna allatheena yujadiloona fee ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahum in fee sudoorihim illa kibrun ma hum bibaligheehi faistaAAith biAllahi innahu huwa alssameeAAu albaseeru
Those who dispute regarding Allah’s revelations without any authority having come to them—there is nothing in their hearts but the feeling of greatness, which they will never attain. So seek refuge in Allah; for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
- 57
Lakhalqu alssamawati waalardi akbaru min khalqi alnnasi walakinna akthara alnnasi la yaAAlamoona
Certainly the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of humanity, but most people do not know.
- 58
Wama yastawee alaAAma waalbaseeru waallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati wala almuseeo qaleelan ma tatathakkaroona
Not equal are the blind and the seeing. Nor are those who believe and work righteousness equal to the sinners. How little you reflect.
- 59
Inna alssaAAata laatiyatun la rayba feeha walakinna akthara alnnasi la yuminoona
Indeed, the Hour is coming; there is no doubt about it; but most people do not believe.
- 60
Waqala rabbukumu odAAoonee astajib lakum inna allatheena yastakbiroona AAan AAibadatee sayadkhuloona jahannama dakhireena
Your Lord has said, “Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell forcibly.”
- 61
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumu allayla litaskunoo feehi waalnnahara mubsiran inna Allaha lathoo fadlin AAala alnnasi walakinna akthara alnnasi la yashkuroona
It is Allah who made the night for you, that you may rest therein; and the day allowing sight. Allah is Gracious towards the people, but most people do not give thanks.
- 62
Thalikumu Allahu rabbukum khaliqu kulli shayin la ilaha illa huwa faanna tufakoona
Such is Allah, your Lord, Creator of all things. There is no god except Him; so how could you turn away?
- 63
Kathalika yufaku allatheena kanoo biayati Allahi yajhadoona
Thus are turned away those who dispute the signs of Allah.
- 64
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumu alarda qararan waalssamaa binaan wasawwarakum faahsana suwarakum warazaqakum mina alttayyibati thalikumu Allahu rabbukum fatabaraka Allahu rabbu alAAalameena
It is Allah who made the earth a habitat for you, and the sky a structure. And He designed you, and designed you well; and He provided you with the good things. Such is Allah, your Lord; so blessed is Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
- 65
Huwa alhayyu la ilaha illa huwa faodAAoohu mukhliseena lahu alddeena alhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena
He is the Living One. There is no god except He. So pray to Him, devoting your religion to Him. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
- 66
Qul innee nuheetu an aAAbuda allatheena tadAAoona min dooni Allahi lamma jaaniya albayyinatu min rabbee waomirtu an oslima lirabbi alAAalameena
Say, “I was prohibited from worshiping those you invoke besides Allah, now that clear revelations have come to me from my Lord; and I was commanded to submit to the Lord of the Worlds.”
- 67

It is He who created you from dust, then from a seed, then from an embryo, then He brings you out as an infant, then He lets you reach your maturity, then you become elderly—although some of you die sooner—so that you may reach a predetermined age, so that you may understand.
- 68
Huwa allathee yuhyee wayumeetu faitha qada amran fainnama yaqoolu lahu kun fayakoonu
It is He who gives life and death; and when He decides on a thing, He just says to it, “Be,” and it comes to be.
- 69
Alam tara ila allatheena yujadiloona fee ayati Allahi anna yusrafoona
Have you not observed those who dispute regarding Allah’s revelations, how they have deviated?
- 70
Allatheena kaththaboo bialkitabi wabima arsalna bihi rusulana fasawfa yaAAlamoona
Those who call the Book a lie, and what We sent Our messengers with—they will surely know.
- 71
Ithi alaghlalu fee aAAnaqihim waalssalasilu yushaboona
When the yokes are around their necks, and they will be dragged by the chains.
- 72
Fee alhameemi thumma fee alnnari yusjaroona
Into the boiling water, then in the Fire they will be consumed.
- 73
Thumma qeela lahum ayna ma kuntum tushrikoona
Then it will be said to them, “Where are those you used to deify?
- 74
Min dooni Allahi qaloo dalloo AAanna bal lam nakun nadAAoo min qablu shayan kathalika yudillu Allahu alkafireena
Instead of Allah?” They will say, “They have abandoned us. In fact, we were praying to nothing before.” Thus Allah sends the disbelievers astray.
- 75
Thalikum bima kuntum tafrahoona fee alardi bighayri alhaqqi wabima kuntum tamrahoona
That is because you used to rejoice on earth in other than the truth, and because you used to behave with vanity.
- 76
Odkhuloo abwaba jahannama khalideena feeha fabisa mathwa almutakabbireena
Enter the gates of Hell, to remain therein forever. What a terrible dwelling for the arrogant.
- 77
Faisbir inna waAAda Allahi haqqun faimma nuriyannaka baAAda allathee naAAiduhum aw natawaffayannaka failayna yurjaAAoona
So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. Whether We show you some of what We have promised them, or take you to Us, to Us they will be returned.
- 78

We sent messengers before you. Some of them We told you about, and some We did not tell you about. No messenger can bring a miracle except by leave of Allah. Then, when the command of Allah is issued, fair judgment will be passed, and there and then the seekers of vanity will lose.
- 79
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumu alanAAama litarkaboo minha waminha takuloona
Allah is He who created the domestic animals for you—some for you to ride, and some you eat.
- 80

And in them you have other benefits as well, and through them you satisfy your needs. And on them, and on the ships, you are transported.

Wayureekum ayatihi faayya ayati Allahi tunkiroona

Falamma raaw basana qaloo amanna biAllahi wahdahu wakafarna bima kunna bihi mushrikeena
Then, when they witnessed Our might, they said, “We believe in Allah alone, and we reject what we used to associate with Him.”
- 85
Falam yaku yanfaAAuhum eemanuhum lamma raaw basana sunnata Allahi allatee qad khalat fee AAibadihi wakhasira hunalika alkafiroona
