What Surah Luqman is about
Luqman is the 31st surah of the Quran and lies within juz 21. It was revealed in Mecca and is named after Luqman, a man whom Allah describes as having been given wisdom (12). The Quran does not call him a prophet, and most scholars understood him to be a wise and righteous man rather than a prophet. The surah is loved above all for verses 13 to 19, a father's advice to his son that reads as a short guide to faith and character.
The surah opens by describing the Quran as guidance and mercy for those who do good, who pray, give charity and are certain of the Hereafter (1 to 5). It contrasts them with the person who buys up idle, distracting talk to lead people away from Allah's path and turns away from the verses as though deaf (6 to 7). Verses 10 and 11 point to the heavens raised without visible pillars, the mountains, the animals and the rain, and challenge anyone to show what other gods have created.
Then comes Luqman. Verse 12 says his wisdom was summed up in gratitude to Allah. In verse 13 he begins advising his son, first of all not to associate anything with Allah. Verses 14 and 15 are Allah's own words, placed inside Luqman's advice: be grateful to your parents, remembering the mother who carried you in weakness upon weakness, but do not obey them if they push you to associate partners with Allah, while still keeping them company kindly in this world. Luqman then continues: nothing is hidden from Allah, even a mustard seed inside a rock (16); establish prayer, encourage good, forbid wrong and be patient (17); do not turn your cheek away from people in pride or walk arrogantly (18); and be moderate in your pace and lower your voice (19).
The rest of the surah returns to Allah's signs. Verse 22 says whoever submits to Allah while doing good has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. Verse 27 says that if every tree were a pen and the ocean, with seven more oceans, were ink, Allah's words would not run out. Verse 33 warns of a Day when no parent can help a child and no child a parent, and verse 34 closes by naming five things whose knowledge belongs to Allah: the Hour, the rain, what is in the womb, what a person will earn tomorrow, and where they will die.
Main themes
Guidance and distraction
The surah opens by describing the Quran as guidance for people who pray, give and believe in the Hereafter. It contrasts them with a person who trades in idle talk to pull others away from Allah's path and mocks it.
Verses 1–11Wisdom begins with gratitude and tawhid
Luqman's wisdom is first described as gratitude to Allah, and his first instruction to his son is not to associate anything with Allah, which he calls a great wrong.
Verses 12–13Honoring parents
Inside Luqman's advice, Allah speaks about parents, especially the mother who carried and nursed her child through hardship. Children are told to thank Allah and their parents, and to stay kind and present with parents even if they disagree on faith.
Verses 14–15Luqman's advice on character
Luqman reminds his son that Allah sees even the smallest deed, and tells him to pray, encourage good, discourage wrong and be patient. He then turns to manners: not turning away from people in pride, not strutting, walking at a moderate pace and keeping his voice low.
Verses 16–19The trustworthy handhold and endless words
Those who submit to Allah and do good are holding the firmest handhold. The image of all trees as pens and the seas as ink shows that Allah's words can never be exhausted.
Verses 20–30What only Allah knows
The surah ends with a warning about the Day when family ties cannot help, and with five things whose knowledge is with Allah alone, including what a person will earn tomorrow and in what land they will die.
Verses 31–34
Verses to know
When Luqman said to his son, as he advised him, “O my son, do not associate anything with Allah, for idolatry is a terrible wrong.”
Luqman's first piece of advice to his son is not to associate partners with Allah, showing what he considered the foundation of everything else.
We have entrusted the human being with the care of his parents. His mother carried him through hardship upon hardship, weaning him in two years. So give thanks to Me, and to your parents. To Me is the destination.
This verse describes a mother carrying her child in weakness upon weakness and nursing for two years, and pairs gratitude to Allah with gratitude to parents. It is one of the Quran's best-known verses on parents.
17O my son, observe the prayer, advocate righteousness, forbid evil, and be patient over what has befallen you. These are of the most honorable traits. 18And do not treat people with arrogance, nor walk proudly on earth. Allah does not love the arrogant showoffs. 19And moderate your stride, and lower your voice. The most repulsive of voices is the donkey’s voice.”
These verses gather Luqman's practical advice: prayer, encouraging good, patience, humility with people and moderation in walking and speaking. They are often taught to children as a guide to good character.
If all the trees on earth were pens, filled by the ocean, with seven more oceans besides, the words of Allah would not run out. Allah is Majestic and Wise.
The image of every tree as a pen and the ocean, with seven more oceans, as ink, still not exhausting Allah's words, is one of the most vivid descriptions of Allah's knowledge in the Quran.
When Surah Luqman is recited
Luqman's advice in verses 13 to 19 is widely taught to children in Muslim homes and schools as a short guide to faith, respect for parents and good manners. There is no well-established practice of reciting the surah at a particular time.

When waves, like canopies, cover them, they call upon Allah, devoting their religion to Him. But when He has delivered them to dry land, some of them waver. No one renounces Our revelations except the treacherous blasphemer.

O people! Be conscious of your Lord, and dread a Day when no parent can avail his child, nor can a child avail his parent, in anything. The promise of Allah is true. Therefore, do not let this life deceive you, nor let illusions deceive you regarding Allah.

With Allah rests the knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain, and He knows what the wombs contain. No soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Allah is All-Knowing, Well-Informed.
