What Surah Muhammad is about
Surah Muhammad is the 47th surah of the Quran, a Medinan surah of 38 verses. It takes its name from verse 2, one of only four places in the Quran where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned by name. It is sometimes also called Surah Al-Qital, "Fighting", because it addresses the early Muslim community at a time of armed conflict with Mecca.
The surah opens with a clear contrast: Allah makes the deeds of those who disbelieve and block His path come to nothing, while He removes the sins of those who believe in what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ and sets their affairs right (47:1-3). Verses 4-9 deal with conduct in battle, including the option of freeing captives as a favor or for ransom, and promise that if believers support Allah's cause, He will support them and make their footing firm (47:7).
Verse 15 describes the Garden promised to the righteous, with rivers of water that never goes stale, milk that never changes, delicious wine, and pure honey, along with forgiveness from their Lord. Verse 19 is a short and central instruction: know that there is no god but Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and women.
Much of the rest addresses the hypocrites in Medina, who listened to the Prophet ﷺ and then asked what he had just said (47:16), and who feared a revelation that mentioned fighting (47:20). Verse 22 warns that turning away leads to corruption and cutting family ties, and verse 24 asks whether they do not reflect on the Quran or whether their hearts are locked. The surah ends by saying Allah will test people (47:31), that this life is play and distraction (47:36), and that whoever is stingy is stingy only against himself, because Allah is the Rich and people are the poor (47:38).
Main themes
Two kinds of people
The surah opens by dividing people into those who follow falsehood and those who follow the truth from their Lord. The first group's deeds are lost, while the second have their sins removed and their condition set right.
Verses 1–3Support Allah and He will support you
Addressing a community under threat, the surah gives guidance on battle and captives. It promises that Allah will guide and protect those who strive for His cause, and that He is the protector of the believers.
Verses 4–13The rivers of the Garden
Verse 15 gives one of the most detailed descriptions of Paradise in the Quran, with four kinds of rivers and every kind of fruit. It is set against those who will drink scalding water.
Verses 14–17Hearts that are locked
The hypocrites listen without taking anything in, recoil when fighting is mentioned, and secretly cooperate with the enemy. The surah asks whether they do not reflect on the Quran, and says Allah will make their malice known.
Verses 20–30Tested, and asked to give
Allah promises to test people until those who strive and are patient become known. The surah closes by calling on believers to spend in His cause, reminding them that Allah is free of need and they are the ones in need.
Verses 31–38
Verses to know
O you who believe! If you support Allah, He will support you, and will strengthen your foothold.
A short promise that if the believers support Allah's cause, He will support them and make their feet firm.
The likeness of the Garden promised to the righteous: in it are rivers of pure water, and rivers of milk forever fresh, and rivers of wine delightful to the drinkers, and rivers of strained honey. And therein they will have of every fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. Like one abiding in the Fire forever, and are given to drink boiling water, that cuts up their bowels?
A detailed picture of the Garden, with rivers of water, milk, wine and honey, followed by forgiveness from the Lord.
Know that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sin, and for the believing men and believing women. Allah knows your movements, and your resting-place.
It joins knowledge of tawhid with seeking forgiveness, for oneself and for all believing men and women. Scholars often cite it to show that knowledge comes before action.
Will they not ponder the Quran? Or are there locks upon their hearts?
A direct question about reflecting on the Quran: or are there locks on their hearts. It is one of the verses most quoted to encourage reflective reading.

- 1
Allatheena kafaroo wasaddoo AAan sabeeli Allahi adalla aAAmalahum
Those who disbelieve and repel from the path of Allah—He nullifies their works.
- 2
Waallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati waamanoo bima nuzzila AAala muhammadin wahuwa alhaqqu min rabbihim kaffara AAanhum sayyiatihim waaslaha balahum
While those who believe, and work righteousness, and believe in what was sent down to Muhammad—and it is the truth from their Lord—He remits their sins, and relieves their concerns.
- 3
Thalika bianna allatheena kafaroo ittabaAAoo albatila waanna allatheena amanoo ittabaAAoo alhaqqa min rabbihim kathalika yadribu Allahu lilnnasi amthalahum
That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehoods, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Allah thus cites for the people their examples.
- 4

When you encounter those who disbelieve, strike at their necks. Then, when you have routed them, bind them firmly. Then, either release them by grace, or by ransom, until war lays down its burdens. Had Allah willed, He could have defeated them Himself, but He thus tests some of you by means of others. As for those who are killed in the way of Allah, He will not let their deeds go to waste.
- 5
Sayahdeehim wayuslihu balahum
He will guide them, and will improve their state of mind.

And will admit them into Paradise, which He has identified for them.
- 7

But as for those who disbelieve, for them is perdition, and He will waste their deeds.

That is because they hated what Allah revealed, so He nullified their deeds.
- 10

That is because Allah is the Master of those who believe, while the disbelievers have no master.

Innama alhayatu alddunya laAAibun walahwun wain tuminoo watattaqoo yutikum ojoorakum wala yasalkum amwalakum
The life of this world is nothing but play and pastime. But if you have faith and lead a righteous life, He will grant you your rewards, and He will not ask you for your possessions.

In yasalkumooha fayuhfikum tabkhaloo wayukhrij adghanakum
Were He to ask you for it, and press you, you would become tightfisted, and He would expose your unwillingness.

Haantum haolai tudAAawna litunfiqoo fee sabeeli Allahi faminkum man yabkhalu waman yabkhal fainnama yabkhalu AAan nafsihi waAllahu alghaniyyu waantumu alfuqarao wain tatawallaw yastabdil qawman ghayrakum thumma la yakoonoo amthalakum
Here you are, being called to spend in the cause of Allah. Among you are those who withhold; but whoever withholds is withholding against his own soul. Allah is the Rich, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people, and they will not be like you.
