What Surah Qaf is about
Surah Qaf is the 50th surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 45 verses. It takes its name from the Arabic letter Qaf with which it opens, followed by an oath by the glorious Quran. Its subject from beginning to end is the resurrection, which the Meccans found too strange to believe.
The surah opens with their objection: when we have died and become dust, that is a far-fetched return (50:2-3). It answers that Allah knows exactly what the earth takes from them (50:4), and then points to the sky without cracks, the earth with its mountains and plants, and rain that brings gardens, grain and tall date palms to life (50:6-11). Just as dead land is revived, so will people be brought out. Verses 12-14 name the nations who denied their messengers before.
Verse 16 says that Allah created the human being, knows what his soul whispers to him, and is closer to him than his jugular vein. Two recording angels sit on the right and the left, and not a word is spoken without a watcher ready to record it (50:17-18). Then come the stupor of death, the blowing of the Trumpet, and each soul arriving with a driver and a witness (50:19-21). The person is told that his covering has been removed and his sight today is sharp (50:22).
In a striking image, Hell is asked whether it is full and answers by asking for more (50:30), while Paradise is brought near to those mindful of Allah who return to Allah with a repentant heart (50:31-35). The surah closes by telling the Prophet ﷺ to bear what they say patiently, to glorify his Lord before sunrise and sunset and at night (50:39-40), and to remind with the Quran whoever fears the warning (50:45).
Main themes
A far-fetched return
The disbelievers marvel that a warner has come and find resurrection after turning to dust impossible. The surah replies that Allah knows what the earth consumes of them and keeps a complete record.
Verses 1–5Signs of revival
The sky, the spread-out earth, mountains, plants, rain and tall palm trees are presented as reminders for anyone who turns to Allah. Reviving a dead land with rain is described as being like the resurrection.
Verses 6–15Nearer than the jugular vein
Allah knows even the whispers of the soul and is closer to a person than his own jugular vein. Two angels record every word, which gives the surah's message of accountability a very personal edge.
Verses 16–18Death, the Trumpet and the record
The stupor of death comes, the Trumpet sounds, and each soul is brought forward with a driver and a witness. The veil of heedlessness is lifted, and a companion disowns any blame for the person's choices.
Verses 19–29Hell asks for more, Paradise brought near
Hell is asked if it is full and asks for more, while Paradise is brought close to those who feared the Most Gracious unseen and came with a repentant heart. They are told to enter in peace and given more than they wish for.
Verses 30–35Patience, praise and reminder
The Prophet ﷺ is told to be patient, to glorify his Lord at the edges of the day and in the night, and to listen for the call on the Day of Emergence. His role is to remind with the Quran, not to compel.
Verses 36–45
Verses to know
We created the human being, and We know what his soul whispers to him. We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
Allah knows the whispers of the soul and is nearer to a person than the jugular vein, one of the Quran's best-known verses on His closeness.
مَّا يَلۡفِظُ مِن قَوۡلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيۡهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدࣱ ﴿١٨﴾
Not a word does he utter, but there is a watcher by him, ready.
Not a single word is uttered without a watcher ready to record it. It is often quoted as a reminder to be careful with speech.
“You were in neglect of this, so We lifted your screen from you, and your vision today is keen.”
Each person is told that the covering of heedlessness has been removed and their sight is now sharp, a description of seeing clearly when it is too late.
يَوۡمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمۡتَلَأۡتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلۡ مِن مَّزِيدٖ ﴿٣٠﴾
On the Day when We will say to Hell, “Are you full?” And it will say, “Are there any more?”
Hell is asked whether it is full and replies by asking for more, a vivid and unsettling image.
When Surah Qaf is recited
Surah Qaf was one of the surahs the Prophet ﷺ recited often in public. Sahih Muslim reports that Umm Hisham bint Harithah learned it directly from him because he recited it from the pulpit every Friday in his sermon. Sahih Muslim also reports that he recited Qaf, together with Surah Al-Qamar, in the Eid prayers, and that he often recited it in the Fajr prayer.
