What Surah Yunus is about
Surah Yunus is the tenth surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 109 verses that sits entirely within the eleventh juz. It is named after the prophet Jonah (Yunus), although he is mentioned only once, in verse 98, where his people are singled out as the one community that believed before it was too late and was spared. The story of Jonah himself, the boat and the fish, is told elsewhere, in 37:139-148 and 21:87-88.
The surah opens with the letters Alif, Lam, Ra (verse 1) and with the objection of the Meccans that a man from among them should receive revelation (verse 2). Verses 3-6 answer by pointing to creation: the heavens and earth, the sun and the moon set in phases so that people can count the years, and the alternation of night and day. Verses 7-10 contrast people who are content with this life with believers, whose prayer in Paradise begins with glorifying Allah and ends with praise. A pattern the surah returns to several times is the person who calls on Allah in hardship and forgets Him once it passes (verse 12), pictured in verses 22-23 as sailors caught in a storm. Verse 24 compares worldly life to a crop that looks its best and is flattened overnight.
The middle of the surah answers the demand to bring a different Quran or change it (verses 15-16) and challenges anyone who calls it invented to produce a single surah like it (verse 38). It asks who provides, who controls hearing and sight, and who brings the living from the dead (verses 31-36). Verses 57-58 describe the Quran as advice and healing for what is in the hearts, and verses 61-64 say that Allah sees every deed and that His friends have nothing to fear and will not grieve. The final third recalls Noah briefly (verses 71-73), then Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh at greater length (verses 75-92), ending with Pharaoh declaring belief only as he drowns and his body being kept as a sign. After the mention of Jonah's people (verse 98), the surah says faith cannot be forced on anyone (verses 99-100) and closes by telling the Prophet ﷺ to follow what is revealed and be patient (verse 109).
Main themes
Signs in the sky and the calendar
Early on, the surah points to the sun as a source of radiance and the moon as a light whose phases let people count years. It says Allah created none of this without purpose, and that the change of night and day carries signs for people who pay attention.
Verses 3–6Remembering Allah only in a storm
Verse 12 describes a person who prays lying down, sitting and standing while in trouble, then walks off as if nothing happened. Verses 22-23 give the picture of a ship in a sudden storm, its passengers praying sincerely, then going back to wrongdoing once they reach land.
Verses 12–23The challenge of the Quran
The surah insists the Quran could not have been produced by anyone other than Allah and that it confirms earlier scripture. To those who say it was invented, verse 38 issues a challenge to bring one surah like it, calling on any help they like.
Verses 37–38The friends of Allah
Verse 61 says nothing a person does, not even the weight of an atom, escapes Allah. Verses 62-64 then describe His friends as those who believe and stay mindful of Him, promising them good news in this life and the next and freedom from fear and grief.
Verses 61–64Moses, Pharaoh and a faith that came too late
Moses and Aaron face Pharaoh, who calls their signs sorcery and summons his own sorcerers. Only a few young people believe at first, out of fear. When Pharaoh finally declares belief while drowning, he is told it is too late, and his body is preserved as a sign for later generations.
Verses 75–92Belief cannot be forced
Jonah's people are the exception who believed in time and were spared. The surah then says that if Allah had willed, everyone on earth would believe, and asks whether the Prophet ﷺ would compel people. The final verses leave each person responsible for their own guidance.
Verses 98–108
Verses to know
O people! There has come to you advice from your Lord, and healing for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.
This verse describes the Quran as advice from Allah, healing for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy, which is why it is often cited when people speak of the Quran as a comfort.
62Unquestionably, Allah’s friends have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve. 63Those who believe and are aware. 64For them is good news in this life, and in the Hereafter. There is no alteration to the words of Allah. That is the supreme triumph.
These verses define who the friends of Allah are in simple terms, belief and mindfulness, rather than special status, and promise them that they will not fear or grieve.
90And We delivered the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his troops pursued them, defiantly and aggressively. Until, when he was about to drown, he said, “I believe that there is no god except the One the Children of Israel believe in, and I am of those who submit.” 91Now? When you have rebelled before, and been of the mischief-makers? 92Today We will preserve your body, so that you become a sign for those after you. But most people are heedless of Our signs.
Pharaoh's last-moment declaration of belief and the preservation of his body are told most fully here, and they make the surah's point that repentance has to come before the punishment arrives.
If Allah afflicts you with harm, none can remove it except He. And if He wants good for you, none can repel His grace. He makes it reach whomever He wills of His servants. He is the Forgiver, the Merciful.
A short statement that no one can lift a harm Allah allows and no one can block a good He intends, often quoted as a reminder to rely on Him alone.

To Him is your return, all together. The promise of Allah is true. He originates creation, and then He repeats it, to reward those who believe and do good deeds with equity. As for those who disbelieve, for them is a drink of boiling water, and agonizing torment, on account of their disbelief.

The likeness of the present life is this: water that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which the people and the animals eat. Until, when the earth puts on its fine appearance, and is beautified, and its inhabitants think that they have mastered it, Our command descends upon it by night or by day, and We turn it into stubble, as if it had not flourished the day before. We thus clarify the revelations for people who reflect.

WaAllahu yadAAoo ila dari alssalami wayahdee man yashao ila siratin mustaqeemin
Allah invites to the Home of Peace, and guides whomever He wills to a straight path.
- 26
Lillatheena ahsanoo alhusna waziyadatun wala yarhaqu wujoohahum qatarun wala thillatun olaika ashabu aljannati hum feeha khalidoona
For those who have done good is goodness, and more. Neither gloom nor shame will come over their faces. These are the inhabitants of Paradise, abiding therein forever.
- 27

As for those who have earned evil deeds: a reward of similar evil, and shame will cover them. They will have no defense against Allah—as if their faces are covered with dark patches of night. These are the inmates of the Fire, abiding therein forever.
- 28
Wayawma nahshuruhum jameeAAan thumma naqoolu lillatheena ashrakoo makanakum antum washurakaokum fazayyalna baynahum waqala shurakaohum ma kuntum iyyana taAAbudoona
On the Day when We will gather them all together, then say to those who ascribed partners, “To your place, you and your partners.” Then We will separate between them, and their partners will say, “It was not us you were worshiping.”
- 29
Fakafa biAllahi shaheedan baynana wabaynakum in kunna AAan AAibadatikum laghafileena
“Allah is sufficient witness between us and you. We were unaware of your worshiping us.”
- 30
Hunalika tabloo kullu nafsin ma aslafat waruddoo ila Allahi mawlahumu alhaqqi wadalla AAanhum ma kanoo yaftaroona
There, every soul will experience what it had done previously; and they will be returned to Allah, their True Master; and what they used to invent will fail them.
- 31

Say, “Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? And who controls the hearing and the sight? And who produces the living from the dead, and produces the dead from the living? And who governs the Order?” They will say, “Allah.” Say, “Will you not be careful?”
- 32
Fathalikumu Allahu rabbukumu alhaqqu famatha baAAda alhaqqi illa alddalalu faanna tusrafoona
Such is Allah, your Lord—the True. What is there, beyond the truth, except falsehood? How are you turned away?
- 33
Kathalika haqqat kalimatu rabbika AAala allatheena fasaqoo annahum la yuminoona
Thus your Lord’s Word proved true against those who disobeyed, for they do not believe.
- 34
Qul hal min shurakaikum man yabdao alkhalqa thumma yuAAeeduhu quli Allahu yabdao alkhalqa thumma yuAAeeduhu faanna tufakoona
Say, “Can any of your partners initiate creation, and then repeat it?” Say, “Allah initiates creation, and then repeats it. How are you so deluded?”
- 35
Qul hal min shurakaikum man yahdee ila alhaqqi quli Allahu yahdee lilhaqqi afaman yahdee ila alhaqqi ahaqqu an yuttabaAAa amman la yahiddee illa an yuhda fama lakum kayfa tahkumoona
Say, “Can any of your partners guide to the truth?” Say, “Allah guides to the truth. Is He who guides to the truth more worthy of being followed, or he who does not guide, unless he himself is guided? What is the matter with you? How do you judge?”
- 36
Wama yattabiAAu aktharuhum illa thannan inna alththanna la yughnee mina alhaqqi shayan inna Allaha AAaleemun bima yafAAaloona
Most of them follow nothing but assumptions; and assumptions avail nothing against the truth. Allah is fully aware of what they do.
- 37
Wama kana hatha alquranu an yuftara min dooni Allahi walakin tasdeeqa allathee bayna yadayhi watafseela alkitabi la rayba feehi min rabbi alAAalameena
This Quran could not have been produced by anyone other than Allah. In fact, it is a confirmation of what preceded it, and an elaboration of the Book. There is no doubt about it—it is from the Lord of the Universe.
- 38
Am yaqooloona iftarahu qul fatoo bisooratin mithlihi waodAAoo mani istataAAtum min dooni Allahi in kuntum sadiqeena
Or do they say, “He has forged it”? Say, “Then produce a single chapter like it, and call upon whomever you can, apart from Allah, if you are truthful.”
- 39
Bal kaththaboo bima lam yuheetoo biAAilmihi walamma yatihim taweeluhu kathalika kaththaba allatheena min qablihim faonthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu alththalimeena
In fact, they deny what is beyond the limits of their knowledge, and whose explanation has not yet reached them. Thus those before them refused to believe. So note the consequences for the wrongdoers.
- 40
Waminhum man yuminu bihi waminhum man la yuminu bihi warabbuka aAAlamu bialmufsideena
Among them are those who believe in it, and among them are those who do not believe in it. Your Lord is fully aware of the mischief-makers.
- 41
Wain kaththabooka faqul lee AAamalee walakum AAamalukum antum bareeoona mimma aAAmalu waana bareeon mimma taAAmaloona
If they accuse you of lying, say, “I have my deeds, and you have your deeds. You are quit of what I do, and I am quit of what you do.”
- 42
Waminhum man yastamiAAoona ilayka afaanta tusmiAAu alssumma walaw kanoo la yaAAqiloona
And among them are those who listen to you. But can you make the deaf hear, even though they do not understand?
- 43
Waminhum man yanthuru ilayka afaanta tahdee alAAumya walaw kanoo la yubsiroona
And among them are those who look at you. But can you guide the blind, even though they do not see?
- 44
Inna Allaha la yathlimu alnnasa shayan walakinna alnnasa anfusahum yathlimoona
Allah does not wrong the people in the least, but the people wrong their own selves.
- 45
Wayawma yahshuruhum kaan lam yalbathoo illa saAAatan mina alnnahari yataAAarafoona baynahum qad khasira allatheena kaththaboo biliqai Allahi wama kanoo muhtadeena
On the Day when He rounds them up—as if they had tarried only one hour of a day—they will recognize one another. Those who denied the meeting with Allah will be the losers. They were not guided.
- 46
Waimma nuriyannaka baAAda allathee naAAiduhum aw natawaffayannaka failayna marjiAAuhum thumma Allahu shaheedun AAala ma yafAAaloona
Whether We show you some of what We promise them, or take you, to Us is their return. Allah is Witness to everything they do.
- 47
Walikulli ommatin rasoolun faitha jaa rasooluhum qudiya baynahum bialqisti wahum la yuthlamoona
Every community has a messenger. When their messenger has come, judgment will be passed between them with fairness, and they will not be wronged.
- 48
Wayaqooloona mata hatha alwaAAdu in kuntum sadiqeena
And they say, “When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are truthful?”
- 49
Qul la amliku linafsee darran wala nafAAan illa ma shaa Allahu likulli ommatin ajalun itha jaa ajaluhum fala yastakhiroona saAAatan wala yastaqdimoona
Say, “I have no power to harm or benefit myself, except as Allah wills. To every nation is an appointed time. Then, when their time arrives, they can neither postpone it by one hour, nor advance it.”
- 50
Qul araaytum in atakum AAathabuhu bayatan aw naharan matha yastaAAjilu minhu almujrimoona
Say, “Have you considered? If His punishment overtakes you by night or by day, what part of it will the guilty seek to hasten?”
- 51
Athumma itha ma waqaAAa amantum bihi alana waqad kuntum bihi tastaAAjiloona
“Then, when it falls, will you believe in it? Now? When before you tried to hasten it?”
- 52
Thumma qeela lillatheena thalamoo thooqoo AAathaba alkhuldi hal tujzawna illa bima kuntum taksiboona
Then it will be said to those who did wrong, “Taste the torment of eternity. Will you be rewarded except for what you used to do?”
- 53
Wayastanbioonaka ahaqqun huwa qul ee warabbee innahu lahaqqun wama antum bimuAAjizeena
And they inquire of you, “Is it true?” Say, “Yes, by my Lord, it is true, and you cannot evade it.”
- 54
Walaw anna likulli nafsin thalamat ma fee alardi laiftadat bihi waasarroo alnnadamata lamma raawoo alAAathaba waqudiya baynahum bialqisti wahum la yuthlamoona
Had every soul which had done wrong possessed everything on earth, it would offer it as a ransom. They will hide the remorse when they witness the suffering, and it will be judged between them equitably, and they will not be wronged.
- 55
Ala inna lillahi ma fee alssamawati waalardi ala inna waAAda Allahi haqqun walakinna aktharahum la yaAAlamoona
Assuredly, to Allah belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. Assuredly, the promise of Allah is true. But most of them do not know.
- 56
Huwa yuhyee wayumeetu wailayhi turjaAAoona
He gives life and causes death, and to Him you will be returned.
- 57
Ya ayyuha alnnasu qad jaatkum mawAAithatun min rabbikum washifaon lima fee alssudoori wahudan warahmatun lilmumineena
O people! There has come to you advice from your Lord, and healing for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.
- 58
Qul bifadli Allahi wabirahmatihi fabithalika falyafrahoo huwa khayrun mimma yajmaAAoona
Say, “In Allah’s grace and mercy let them rejoice. That is better than what they hoard.”
- 59
Qul araaytum ma anzala Allahu lakum min rizqin fajaAAaltum minhu haraman wahalalan qul allahu athina lakum am AAala Allahi taftaroona
Say, “Have you considered the sustenance Allah has sent down for you, some of which you made unlawful, and some lawful?” Say, “Did Allah give you permission, or do you fabricate lies and attribute them to Allah?”
- 60
Wama thannu allatheena yaftaroona AAala Allahi alkathiba yawma alqiyamati inna Allaha lathoo fadlin AAala alnnasi walakinna aktharahum la yashkuroona
What will they think—those who fabricate lies and attribute them to Allah—on the Day of Resurrection? Allah is Bountiful towards the people, but most of them do not give thanks.
- 61

You do not get into any situation, nor do you recite any Quran, nor do you do anything, but We are watching over you as you undertake it. Not even the weight of an atom, on earth or in the sky, escapes your Lord, nor is there anything smaller or larger, but is in a clear record.
- 62
Ala inna awliyaa Allahi la khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona
Unquestionably, Allah’s friends have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve.
- 63
Allatheena amanoo wakanoo yattaqoona
Those who believe and are aware.
- 64
Lahumu albushra fee alhayati alddunya wafee alakhirati la tabdeela likalimati Allahi thalika huwa alfawzu alAAatheemu
For them is good news in this life, and in the Hereafter. There is no alteration to the words of Allah. That is the supreme triumph.
- 65
Wala yahzunka qawluhum inna alAAizzata lillahi jameeAAan huwa alssameeAAu alAAaleemu
And let not their sayings dishearten you. All power is Allah’s. He is the Hearer, the Knower.

Ala inna lillahi man fee alssamawati waman fee alardi wama yattabiAAu allatheena yadAAoona min dooni Allahi shurakaa in yattabiAAoona illa alththanna wain hum illa yakhrusoona
Certainly, to Allah belongs everyone in the heavens and everyone on earth. Those who invoke other than Allah do not follow partners; they follow only assumptions, and they only guess.
- 67
Huwa allathee jaAAala lakumu allayla litaskunoo feehi waalnnahara mubsiran inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yasmaAAoona
It is He who made the night for your rest, and the daylight for visibility. Surely in that are signs for people who listen.

And they said, “Allah has taken a son.” Be He glorified. He is the Self-Sufficient. His is everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Do you have any proof for this? Or are you saying about Allah what you do not know?
- 69

MataAAun fee alddunya thumma ilayna marjiAAuhum thumma nutheequhumu alAAathaba alshshadeeda bima kanoo yakfuroona
Some enjoyment in this world; then to Us is their return; then We will make them taste the severe punishment on account of their disbelief.

And relate to them the story of Noah, when he said to his people, “O my people, if my presence among you and my reminding you of Allah’s signs is too much for you, then in Allah I have put my trust. So come to a decision, you and your partners, and do not let the matter perplex you; then carry out your decision on me, and do not hold back.”
- 72
Fain tawallaytum fama saaltukum min ajrin in ajriya illa AAala Allahi waomirtu an akoona mina almuslimeena
“But if you turn away, I have not asked you for any wage. My wage falls only on Allah, and I was commanded to be of those who submit.”
- 73
Fakaththaboohu fanajjaynahu waman maAAahu fee alfulki wajaAAalnahum khalaifa waaghraqna allatheena kaththaboo biayatina faonthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu almunthareena
But they denounced him, so We saved him and those with him in the Ark, and We made them successors, and We drowned those who rejected Our signs. So consider the fate of those who were warned.
- 74
Thumma baAAathna min baAAdihi rusulan ila qawmihim fajaoohum bialbayyinati fama kanoo liyuminoo bima kaththaboo bihi min qablu kathalika natbaAAu AAala quloobi almuAAtadeena
Then, after him, We sent messengers to their people. They came to them with the clear proofs, but they would not believe in anything they had already rejected. Thus We set a seal on the hearts of the hostile.
- 75
Thumma baAAathna min baAAdihim moosa waharoona ila firAAawna wamalaihi biayatina faistakbaroo wakanoo qawman mujrimeena
Then, after them, We sent Moses and Aaron with Our proofs to Pharaoh and his dignitaries. But they acted arrogantly. They were sinful people.

Qala moosa ataqooloona lilhaqqi lamma jaakum asihrun hatha wala yuflihu alssahiroona

Qaloo ajitana litalfitana AAamma wajadna AAalayhi abaana watakoona lakuma alkibriyao fee alardi wama nahnu lakuma bimumineena
They said, “Did you come to us to divert us from what we found our ancestors following, and so that you become prominent in the land? We will never believe in you.”
- 79
Waqala firAAawnu itoonee bikulli sahirin AAaleemin
Pharaoh said, “Bring me every experienced sorcerer.”

Falamma alqaw qala moosa ma jitum bihi alssihru inna Allaha sayubtiluhu inna Allaha la yuslihu AAamala almufsideena
And when they threw, Moses said, “What you produced is sorcery, and Allah will make it fail. Allah does not foster the efforts of the corrupt.”
- 82
Wayuhiqqu Allahu alhaqqa bikalimatihi walaw kariha almujrimoona
“And Allah upholds the truth with His words, even though the sinners detest it.”
- 83

But none believed in Moses except some children of his people, for fear that Pharaoh and his chiefs would persecute them. Pharaoh was high and mighty in the land. He was a tyrant.
- 84
Waqala moosa ya qawmi in kuntum amantum biAllahi faAAalayhi tawakkaloo in kuntum muslimeena
Moses said, “O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him, if you have submitted.”

And We inspired Moses and his brother, “Settle your people in Egypt, and make your homes places of worship, and perform the prayer, and give good news to the believers.”
- 88

Moses said, “Our Lord, You have given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the worldly life. Our Lord, for them to lead away from Your path. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth, and harden their hearts; they will not believe until they see the painful torment.”
- 89
Qala qad ojeebat daAAwatukuma faistaqeema wala tattabiAAanni sabeela allatheena la yaAAlamoona
He said, “Your prayer has been answered, so go straight, and do not follow the path of those who do not know.”

And We delivered the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his troops pursued them, defiantly and aggressively. Until, when he was about to drown, he said, “I believe that there is no god except the One the Children of Israel believe in, and I am of those who submit.”
- 91

And We settled the Children of Israel in a position of honor, and provided them with good things. They did not differ until knowledge came to them. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding their differences.
- 94

If you are in doubt about what We revealed to you, ask those who read the Scripture before you. The truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be of those who doubt.
- 95
Wala takoonanna mina allatheena kaththaboo biayati Allahi fatakoona mina alkhasireena
And do not be of those who deny Allah’s revelations, lest you become one of the losers.

Inna allatheena haqqat AAalayhim kalimatu rabbika la yuminoona
Those against whom your Lord’s Word is justified will not believe.

If only there was one town that believed and benefited by its belief. Except for the people of Jonah. When they believed, We removed from them the suffering of disgrace in the worldly life, and We gave them comfort for a while.
- 99

Wama kana linafsin an tumina illa biithni Allahi wayajAAalu alrrijsa AAala allatheena la yaAAqiloona
No soul can believe except by Allah’s leave; and He lays disgrace upon those who refuse to understand.

Say, “Look at what is in the heavens and the earth.” But signs and warnings are of no avail for people who do not believe.
- 102

And do not call, apart from Allah, on what neither benefits you nor harms you. If you do, you are then one of the wrongdoers.
- 107

Wain yamsaska Allahu bidurrin fala kashifa lahu illa huwa wain yuridka bikhayrin fala radda lifadlihi yuseebu bihi man yashao min AAibadihi wahuwa alghafooru alrraheemu
If Allah afflicts you with harm, none can remove it except He. And if He wants good for you, none can repel His grace. He makes it reach whomever He wills of His servants. He is the Forgiver, the Merciful.
