Quran verses about charity
The Quran speaks about giving in several words. Sadaqah is voluntary charity, zakat is the obligatory alms, and infaq is the broader act of spending from what Allah has provided. Together they appear across the whole Quran, and nearly every description of the righteous includes some form of giving.
The most detailed passage is in Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261-274, which uses images from farming: a single grain that grows into seven ears of a hundred grains each, a garden on a hill watered by heavy rain or even light dew, and a rock that loses its thin soil in a downpour. These verses teach that giving should be sincere, free of reminders and hurtful words, and preferably from good things. Other verses name who should receive, praise those who feed others for Allah's sake alone, and promise that what is spent will be replaced.
The parable of those who spend their wealth in Allah’s way is that of a grain that produces seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. Allah multiplies for whom He wills. Allah is Bounteous and Knowing.
Al-Baqarah 2:261 Those who spend in Allah's way are compared to a single grain that grows seven ears, each with a hundred grains, and Allah multiplies further for whom He wills.
262Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, and then do not follow up what they spent with reminders of their generosity or with insults, will have their reward with their Lord—they have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve. 263Kind words and forgiveness are better than charity followed by insults. Allah is Rich and Clement.
Al-Baqarah 2:262–263 Giving should not be followed by reminders or insults, and the verses say a kind word and forgiveness are better than charity that hurts.
264O you who believe! Do not nullify your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people, and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His likeness is that of a smooth rock covered with soil: a downpour strikes it, and leaves it bare—they gain nothing from their efforts. Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. 265And the parable of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s approval, and to strengthen their souls, is that of a garden on a hillside. If heavy rain falls on it, its produce is doubled; and if no heavy rain falls, then dew is enough. Allah is Seeing of everything you do.
Al-Baqarah 2:264–265 Charity spoiled by showing off is like soil washed off a smooth rock, while sincere giving is like a hillside garden that thrives on heavy rain or light dew.
O you who believe! Give of the good things you have earned, and from what We have produced for you from the earth. And do not pick the inferior things to give away, when you yourselves would not accept it except with eyes closed. And know that Allah is Sufficient and Praiseworthy.
Al-Baqarah 2:267 Believers are asked to give from the good things they have earned, not the poor-quality things they would not accept themselves.
If you give charity openly, that is good. But if you keep it secret, and give it to the needy in private, that is better for you. It will atone for some of your misdeeds. Allah is Cognizant of what you do.
Al-Baqarah 2:271 Giving openly is good, but giving to the poor in private is better and removes some of a person's misdeeds.
Those who spend their wealth by night and day, privately and publicly, will receive their reward from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve.
Al-Baqarah 2:274 Those who give by night and day, in secret and in public, will have their reward and need not fear or grieve.
You will not attain virtuous conduct until you give of what you cherish. Whatever you give away, Allah is aware of it.
Ali 'Imran 3:92 No one reaches true righteousness until they give from what they love.
Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is he who believes in Allah, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.
Al-Baqarah 2:177 Righteousness is not facing east or west in prayer, but faith joined with giving wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers and those who ask.
Charities are for the poor, and the destitute, and those who administer them, and for reconciling hearts, and for freeing slaves, and for those in debt, and in the path of Allah, and for the traveler in need—an obligation from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, Most Wise.
At-Tawbah 9:60 The Quran names the categories who may receive zakat, including the poor, the needy, those in debt and the stranded traveler.
8And they feed, for the love of Him, the poor, and the orphan, and the captive. 9“We only feed you for the sake of Allah. We want from you neither compensation, nor gratitude.
Al-Insan 76:8–9 The righteous feed the poor, the orphan and the captive out of love for Allah, saying they want no reward or thanks from them.
But if he is in hardship, then deferment until a time of ease. But to remit it as charity is better for you, if you only knew.
Al-Baqarah 2:280 If a debtor is in hardship, the lender should give them time, and forgiving the debt as charity is better still.
Say, “My Lord extends the provision to whomever He wills of His servants, or withholds it. Anything you spend, He will replace it. He is the Best of providers.”
Saba 34:39 Whatever a person spends, Allah will replace it, for He is the best of providers.
The charitable men and charitable women, who have loaned Allah a loan of righteousness—it will be multiplied for them, and for them is a generous reward.
Al-Hadid 57:18 Charitable men and women who lend Allah a good loan will have it multiplied and receive a generous reward.
The Quran cares as much about how you give as about how much. A small gift given quietly, without reminders, from something you actually value, fits these verses better than a large one given for show. And if you have nothing to give today, 2:263 reminds you that a kind word is already worth something.
Questions
What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah?
Zakat is the obligatory alms paid on qualifying wealth, with recipients named in 9:60. Sadaqah is voluntary charity that can be given at any time, in any amount. The Quran discusses both, often together under the word infaq, spending.
What is the verse about charity growing seven ears?
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261 compares spending in Allah's way to a grain that grows seven ears, each holding a hundred grains.
Is it better to give charity secretly?
The Quran says giving openly is good, but giving secretly to the poor is better for you (2:271). Verse 2:274 praises those who give both secretly and openly.
