Quran verses about marriage
The Quran speaks about marriage, nikah, as one of Allah's signs. It describes spouses as created from one another so that each finds rest, sakan, in the other, and says Allah places mawadda, affection, and rahma, mercy, between them. In one of its most tender images, it calls husbands and wives garments for each other, giving comfort, warmth and covering.
Much of what the Quran says about marriage is practical. It asks spouses to live together with kindness even when feelings cool, reminds them of the solemn covenant they made, encourages family members to step in when a marriage is in trouble, and says plainly that reconciliation is best. It also teaches a prayer for spouses and children to be a comfort to the eyes. This page focuses on those verses about the relationship itself rather than the legal details of marriage and divorce.
And of His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquility in them; and He planted love and compassion between you. In this are signs for people who reflect.
Ar-Rum 30:21 The best-known verse on marriage calls it a sign of Allah: spouses created from among yourselves to find rest in, with affection and mercy placed between them.
It is He who created you from a single person, and made from it its mate, that he may find comfort with her. Then, when he has covered her, she conceives a light load, and she carries it around. But when she has grown heavy, they pray to Allah their Lord, “If You give us a good child, we will be among the thankful.”
Al-A'raf 7:189 Allah created people from a single soul and made its mate from it so that one might find comfort in the other, and the couple pray together for a good child.
O people! Fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and created from it its mate, and propagated from them many men and women. And revere Allah whom you ask about, and the parents. Surely, Allah is Watchful over you.
An-Nisa 4:1 Surah An-Nisa opens by reminding people they all come from one soul and its mate, and asks them to honor the ties of kinship.
Permitted for you is intercourse with your wives on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. Allah knows that you used to betray yourselves, but He turned to you and pardoned you. So approach them now, and seek what Allah has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white streak of dawn can be distinguished from the black streak. Then complete the fast until nightfall. But do not approach them while you are in retreat at the mosques. These are the limits of Allah, so do not come near them. Allah thus clarifies His revelations to the people, that they may attain piety.
Al-Baqarah 2:187 In a verse about the nights of Ramadan, spouses are described as garments for one another.
O you who believe! It is not permitted for you to inherit women against their will. And do not coerce them in order to take away some of what you had given them, unless they commit a proven adultery. And live with them in kindness. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which Allah has placed much good.
An-Nisa 4:19 Husbands are told to live with their wives in kindness, and that if they dislike something in them, Allah may have placed much good in it.
And how can you take it back, when you have been intimate with one another, and they have received from you a solid commitment?
An-Nisa 4:21 The Quran describes marriage as a solemn covenant, a firm commitment between two people who have become intimate.
Give women their dowries graciously. But if they willingly forgo some of it, then consume it with enjoyment and pleasure.
An-Nisa 4:4 Husbands are told to give the bridal gift, the mahr, willingly and generously.
If you divorce them before you have touched them, but after you had set the dowry for them, give them half of what you specified—unless they forgo the right, or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract forgoes it. But to forgo is nearer to piety. And do not forget generosity between one another. Allah is Seeing of everything you do.
Al-Baqarah 2:237 Even when a marriage ends early, both sides are reminded not to forget generosity and graciousness toward each other.
If you fear a breach between the two, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family. If they wish to reconcile, Allah will bring them together. Allah is Knowledgeable, Expert.
An-Nisa 4:35 When a couple fear a breakdown, an arbiter from each family can help, and if the two want to put things right Allah will bring them together.
If a woman fears maltreatment or desertion from her husband, there is no fault in them if they reconcile their differences, for reconciliation is best. Souls are prone to avarice; yet if you do what is good, and practice piety—Allah is Cognizant of what you do.
An-Nisa 4:128 If a wife fears her husband turning away, the couple can come to an agreement, and the verse says simply that reconciliation is best.
And wed the singles among you, and those who are fit among your servants and maids. If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
An-Nur 24:32 The community is encouraged to help single people marry, with the assurance that Allah can provide for those who are poor.
And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us delight in our spouses and our children, and make us a good example for the righteous.”
Al-Furqan 25:74 Among the qualities of the servants of the Most Merciful is a prayer that their spouses and children be a comfort to their eyes.
The Quran's picture of marriage is warm but realistic. It expects difficult seasons, which is why it speaks of kindness when feelings fade, of family stepping in, and of reconciliation. The prayer in 25:74 is a gentle one to make a habit, whether you are married, hoping to be, or working through a hard stretch.
