What Surah Al-Anbiya is about

Al-Anbiya, The Prophets, is the 21st surah of the Quran and opens juz 17. It is a Meccan surah, and its name fits it well: more than a dozen prophets are mentioned in it, from Noah (Nuh) and Abraham (Ibrahim) to Zechariah (Zakariyya) and John (Yahya), with Mary (Maryam) and her son closing the list.

The surah begins with a jolt. Verse 1 says that people's reckoning has drawn near while they turn away, and verses 2 to 5 describe how the Meccans treated the message of Muhammad ﷺ as a game, calling it dreams, invention or poetry. Verses 7 to 9 answer that every earlier messenger was also a human being who ate food and died. Verses 16 to 33 then turn to the creation itself: the heavens and earth were not made for amusement (16), if there were other gods besides Allah everything would fall into ruin (22), the heavens and earth were once joined and every living thing was made from water (30), and the sun and moon each move in their own orbit (33). Verse 35 sums up life as a test of hardship and ease, and verse 47 describes scales of justice that will weigh even a mustard seed.

The long middle section (48 to 91) moves through the prophets. Abraham breaks his people's idols and is thrown into a fire that Allah makes cool and safe (51 to 70). David (Dawud) and Solomon (Sulayman) judge a dispute about a field (78 to 82). Then comes a series of short scenes in which a prophet calls out in distress and is answered: Job (Ayyub) in his illness (83 to 84), Jonah (Yunus) in the darkness (87 to 88), and Zechariah asking for a child (89 to 90). Verse 92 draws the lesson that all these prophets were one community worshiping one Lord. The surah closes with the end of the world, the sky folded up like a scroll (104), and the reminder in verse 107 that the Prophet ﷺ was sent as a mercy.

Main themes

  1. A reckoning that people ignore

The opening verses describe people who hear each new reminder with half their attention, joking and arguing while their accounting comes closer. Their objections, that the Prophet is only a man, a poet or a dreamer, are answered by pointing out that every messenger before him was human too.

    Verses 1–15
  2. Creation is not a game

Allah says He did not create the heavens and the earth for play, and that the order of the universe itself shows there is no god but Allah. The passage points to the joined heavens and earth being split apart, life coming from water, the mountains, the protected sky and the orbits of the sun and moon.

    Verses 16–33
  3. Life as a test

Every soul will taste death, and both good times and bad are a test. Verse 37 adds that human beings are hasty by nature, and verse 47 promises that nothing, however small, will be overlooked on the Day of Judgment.

    Verses 34–47
  4. Abraham and the idols

Abraham questions his father and people about their statues, breaks all but the largest, and challenges them to ask the idols who did it. They admit for a moment that the statues cannot speak, then throw him into a fire, which Allah commands to be cool and safe for him.

    Verses 51–73
  5. Prophets who called and were answered

Job, Jonah and Zechariah each call on Allah in a moment of need and each is answered: Job is healed and given back his family, Jonah is rescued, and Zechariah is given John. Verse 90 describes these prophets as people who hurried to do good and called on Allah with both longing and awe.

    Verses 76–91
  6. One community and a mercy to the worlds

After the stories, Allah declares that the prophets' community is one, though people split it into factions. The surah ends with the folding up of the heavens, the promise that the righteous will inherit the earth, and the description of the Prophet ﷺ as a mercy to all people.

    Verses 92–112

Verses to know

Do the disbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were one mass, and We tore them apart? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not believe?
Al-Anbiya 21:30

This verse describes the heavens and the earth as once being a single mass that was split apart, and says every living thing was made from water. It is one of the most discussed verses about creation in the Quran.

Every soul will taste death. We burden you with adversity and prosperity—a test. And to Us you will be returned.
Al-Anbiya 21:35

In one sentence it states that every soul will die and that both hardship and comfort are tests, a short summary of how the Quran views ordinary life.

87And Jonah, when he stormed out in fury, thinking We had no power over him. But then he cried out in the darkness, “There is no god but You! Glory to You! I was one of the wrongdoers!” 88So We answered him, and saved him from the affliction. Thus We save the faithful.
Al-Anbiya 21:87–88

Jonah's prayer from the darkness, admitting his own wrong and glorifying Allah, is one of the best-known supplications in the Quran, and verse 88 says Allah saves the believers in the same way.

We did not send you except as mercy to mankind.
Al-Anbiya 21:107

This short verse defines the purpose of the Prophet ﷺ's mission as mercy for all people, and it is often quoted for that reason.

When Surah Al-Anbiya is recited

Muslims often memorize and repeat Jonah's prayer from verse 87 in times of distress. A narration in Jami' at-Tirmidhi reports the Prophet ﷺ saying that no Muslim calls on Allah with the prayer of Dhun-Nun (Jonah) for anything without being answered. There is no special occasion tied to reciting the whole surah.

  8. 8

We did not make them mere bodies that ate no food, nor were they immortal.

  9. 9

Then, when they sensed Our might, they started running away from it.

  13. 13

This continued to be their cry, until We made them silent ashes.

We did not create the sky and the earth and what is between them for amusement.

  17. 17

Law aradna an nattakhitha lahwan laittakhathnahu min ladunna in kunna faAAileena

If We wanted amusement, We could have found it within Us, were We to do so.

  18. 18

In fact, We hurl the truth against falsehood, and it crushes it, so it vanishes. Woe unto you, for what you describe.

  19. 19

Walahu man fee alssamawati waalardi waman AAindahu la yastakbiroona AAan AAibadatihi wala yastahsiroona

To Him belongs everyone in the heavens and the earth. Those near Him are not too proud to worship Him, nor do they waver.

  20. 20

    Yusabbihoona allayla waalnnahara la yafturoona

They praise night and day, without ever tiring.

Ami ittakhathoo alihatan mina alardi hum yunshiroona

Or have they taken to themselves gods from the earth who resurrect?

  22. 22

Law kana feehima alihatun illa Allahu lafasadata fasubhana Allahi rabbi alAAarshi AAamma yasifoona

If there were in them gods other than Allah, they would have gone to ruin. So glory be to Allah, Lord of the Throne, beyond what they allege.

  23. 23

La yusalu AAamma yafAAalu wahum yusaloona

He will not be questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.

  24. 24

Ami ittakhathoo min doonihi alihatan qul hatoo burhanakum hatha thikru man maAAiya wathikru man qablee bal aktharuhum la yaAAlamoona alhaqqa fahum muAAridoona

Or have they taken, besides Him, other gods? Say, “Bring your proof. This is a message for those with me, and a message of those before me.” But most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away.

  25. 25

Wama arsalna min qablika min rasoolin illa noohee ilayhi annahu la ilaha illa ana faoAAbudooni

We never sent a messenger before you without inspiring him that: “There is no god but I, so worship Me.”

  26. 26

Waqaloo ittakhatha alrrahmanu waladan subhanahu bal AAibadun mukramoona

And they say, “The Most Merciful has taken to Himself a son.” Be He glorified; they are but honored servants.

  27. 27

La yasbiqoonahu bialqawli wahum biamrihi yaAAmaloona

They never speak before He has spoken, and they only act on His command.

  28. 28

YaAAlamu ma bayna aydeehim wama khalfahum wala yashfaAAoona illa limani irtada wahum min khashyatihi mushfiqoona

He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they do not intercede except for him whom He approves; and they tremble in awe of Him.

  29. 29

Waman yaqul minhum innee ilahun min doonihi fathalika najzeehi jahannama kathalika najzee alththalimeena

And whoever of them says, “I am a god besides Him,” We will reward him with Hell. Thus We reward the wrongdoers.

  30. 30

Awalam yara allatheena kafaroo anna alssamawati waalarda kanata ratqan fafataqnahuma wajaAAalna mina almai kulla shayin hayyin afala yuminoona

Do the disbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were one mass, and We tore them apart? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not believe?

  31. 31

WajaAAalna fee alardi rawasiya an tameeda bihim wajaAAalna feeha fijajan subulan laAAallahum yahtadoona

And We placed on earth stabilizers, lest it sways with them, and We placed therein signposts and passages, that they may be guided.

  32. 32

WajaAAalna alssamaa saqfan mahfoothan wahum AAan ayatiha muAAridoona

And We made the sky a protected ceiling; yet they turn away from its wonders.

  33. 33

Wahuwa allathee khalaqa allayla waalnnahara waalshshamsa waalqamara kullun fee falakin yasbahoona

It is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; each floating in an orbit.

  34. 34

Wama jaAAalna libasharin min qablika alkhulda afain mitta fahumu alkhalidoona

We did not grant immortality to any human being before you. Should you die, are they then the immortal?

  35. 35

Kullu nafsin thaiqatu almawti wanablookum bialshsharri waalkhayri fitnatan wailayna turjaAAoona

Every soul will taste death. We burden you with adversity and prosperity—a test. And to Us you will be returned.

  36. 36

Waitha raaka allatheena kafaroo in yattakhithoonaka illa huzuwan ahatha allathee yathkuru alihatakum wahum bithikri alrrahmani hum kafiroona

When those who disbelieve see you, they treat you only with ridicule: “Is this the one who mentions your gods?” And they reject the mention of the Merciful.

  37. 37

Khuliqa alinsanu min AAajalin saoreekum ayatee fala tastaAAjiloona

The human being was created of haste. I will show you My signs, so do not seek to rush Me.

  38. 38

Wayaqooloona mata hatha alwaAAdu in kuntum sadiqeena

And they say, “When will this promise come true, if you are truthful?”

  39. 39

Law yaAAlamu allatheena kafaroo heena la yakuffoona AAan wujoohihimu alnnara wala AAan thuhoorihim wala hum yunsaroona

If those who disbelieve only knew, when they cannot keep the fire off their faces and off their backs, and they will not be helped.

  40. 40

Bal tateehim baghtatan fatabhatuhum fala yastateeAAoona raddaha wala hum yuntharoona

In fact, it will come upon them suddenly, and bewilder them. They will not be able to repel it, and they will not be reprieved.

  41. 41

Walaqadi istuhzia birusulin min qablika fahaqa biallatheena sakhiroo minhum ma kanoo bihi yastahzioona

Messengers before you were also ridiculed, but those who jeered were surrounded by what they had ridiculed.

  42. 42

Qul man yaklaokum biallayli waalnnahari mina alrrahmani bal hum AAan thikri rabbihim muAAridoona

Say, “Who guards you against the Merciful by night and by day?” But they turn away from the mention of their Lord.

  43. 43

Am lahum alihatun tamnaAAuhum min doonina la yastateeAAoona nasra anfusihim wala hum minna yushaboona

Or do they have gods who can defend them against Us? They cannot help themselves, nor will they be protected from Us.

  44. 44

Bal mattaAAna haolai waabaahum hatta tala AAalayhimu alAAumuru afala yarawna anna natee alarda nanqusuha min atrafiha afahumu alghaliboona

We have given these enjoyments, and their ancestors, until time grew long upon them. Do they not see how We gradually reduce the land from its extremities? Are they then the victors?

  45. 45

Qul innama onthirukum bialwahyi wala yasmaAAu alssummu aldduAAaa itha ma yuntharoona

Say, “I am warning you through inspiration.” But the deaf cannot hear the call when they are being warned.

  46. 46

Walain massathum nafhatun min AAathabi rabbika layaqoolunna ya waylana inna kunna thalimeena

And when a breath of your Lord’s punishment touches them, they say, “Woe to us, we were truly wicked.”

  47. 47

WanadaAAu almawazeena alqista liyawmi alqiyamati fala tuthlamu nafsun shayan wain kana mithqala habbatin min khardalin atayna biha wakafa bina hasibeena

We will set up the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so that no soul will suffer the least injustice. And even if it be the weight of a mustard-seed, We will bring it up. Sufficient are We as Reckoners.

  48. 48

Walaqad atayna moosa waharoona alfurqana wadiyaan wathikran lilmuttaqeena

We gave Moses and Aaron the Criterion, and illumination, and a reminder for the righteous.

  49. 49

Allatheena yakhshawna rabbahum bialghaybi wahum mina alssaAAati mushfiqoona

Those who fear their Lord in private, and are apprehensive of the Hour.

  50. 50

Wahatha thikrun mubarakun anzalnahu afaantum lahu munkiroona

This too is a blessed message that We revealed. Are you going to deny it?

  51. 51

Walaqad atayna ibraheema rushdahu min qablu wakunna bihi AAalimeena

We gave Abraham his integrity formerly, and We knew him well.

  52. 52

Ith qala liabeehi waqawmihi ma hathihi alttamatheelu allatee antum laha AAakifoona

When he said to his father and his people, “What are these statues to which you are devoted?”

  53. 53

    Qaloo wajadna abaana laha AAabideena

They said, “We found our parents worshiping them.”

  54. 54

Qala laqad kuntum antum waabaokum fee dalalin mubeenin

He said, “You and your parents are in evident error.”

  55. 55

Qaloo ajitana bialhaqqi am anta mina allaAAibeena

They said, “Are you telling us the truth, or are you just playing?”

  56. 56

Qala bal rabbukum rabbu alssamawati waalardi allathee fatarahunna waana AAala thalikum mina alshshahideena

He said, “Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the One who created them, and I bear witness to that.

  57. 57

WataAllahi laakeedanna asnamakum baAAda an tuwalloo mudbireena

By Allah, I will have a plan for your statues after you have gone away.”

  58. 58

FajaAAalahum juthathan illa kabeeran lahum laAAallahum ilayhi yarjiAAoona

So he reduced them into pieces, except for their biggest, that they may return to it.

  59. 59

Qaloo man faAAala hatha bialihatina innahu lamina alththalimeena

They said, “Who did this to our gods? He is certainly one of the wrongdoers.”

They said, “Are you the one who did this to our gods, O Abraham?”

  63. 63

Qala bal faAAalahu kabeeruhum hatha faisaloohum in kanoo yantiqoona

He said, “But it was this biggest of them that did it. Ask them, if they can speak.”

  64. 64

FarajaAAoo ila anfusihim faqaloo innakum antumu alththalimoona

Then they turned to one another, and said, “You yourselves are the wrongdoers.”

  65. 65

Thumma nukisoo AAala ruoosihim laqad AAalimta ma haolai yantiqoona

But they reverted to their old ideas: “You certainly know that these do not speak.”

  66. 66

He said, “Do you worship, instead of Allah, what can neither benefit you in anything, nor harm you?

  67. 67

Offin lakum walima taAAbudoona min dooni Allahi afala taAAqiloona

Fie on you, and on what you worship instead of Allah. Do you not understand?”

  68. 68

Qaloo harriqoohu waonsuroo alihatakum in kuntum faAAileena

They said, “Burn him and support your gods, if you are going to act.”

  69. 69

Qulna ya naru koonee bardan wasalaman AAala ibraheema

We said, “O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.”

  70. 70

    Waaradoo bihi kaydan fajaAAalnahumu alakhsareena

They planned to harm him, but We made them the worst losers.

  71. 71

Wanajjaynahu walootan ila alardi allatee barakna feeha lilAAalameena

And We delivered him, and Lot, to the land that We blessed for all people.

  72. 72

Wawahabna lahu ishaqa wayaAAqooba nafilatan wakullan jaAAalna saliheena

And We granted him Isaac and Jacob as a gift; and each We made righteous.

  73. 73

WajaAAalnahum aimmatan yahdoona biamrina waawhayna ilayhim fiAAla alkhayrati waiqama alssalati waeetaa alzzakati wakanoo lana AAabideena

And We made them leaders, guiding by Our command; and We inspired them to do good works, and to observe the prayer, and to give out charity. They were devoted servants to Us.

  74. 74

Walootan ataynahu hukman waAAilman wanajjaynahu mina alqaryati allatee kanat taAAmalu alkhabaitha innahum kanoo qawma sawin fasiqeena

And Lot—We gave him judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him from the town that practiced the abominations. They were wicked and perverted people.

  75. 75

Waadkhalnahu fee rahmatina innahu mina alssaliheena

And We admitted him into Our mercy; for he was one of the righteous.

  76. 76

Wanoohan ith nada min qablu faistajabna lahu fanajjaynahu waahlahu mina alkarbi alAAatheemi

And Noah, when he called before. So We answered him, and delivered him and his family from the great disaster.

  77. 77

Wanasarnahu mina alqawmi allatheena kaththaboo biayatina innahum kanoo qawma sawin faaghraqnahum ajmaAAeena

And We supported him against the people who rejected Our signs. They were an evil people, so We drowned them all.

  78. 78

Wadawooda wasulaymana ith yahkumani fee alharthi ith nafashat feehi ghanamu alqawmi wakunna lihukmihim shahideena

And David and Solomon, when they gave judgment in the case of the field, when some people’s sheep wandered therein by night; and We were witnesses to their judgment.

  79. 79

Fafahhamnaha sulaymana wakullan atayna hukman waAAilman wasakhkharna maAAa dawooda aljibala yusabbihna waalttayra wakunna faAAileena

And so We made Solomon understand it, and to each We gave wisdom and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains along with David to sing Our praises, and the birds as well—surely We did.

  80. 80

WaAAallamnahu sanAAata laboosin lakum lituhsinakum min basikum fahal antum shakiroona

And We taught him the making of shields for you, to protect you from your violence. Are you, then, appreciative?

  81. 81

Walisulaymana alrreeha AAasifatan tajree biamrihi ila alardi allatee barakna feeha wakunna bikulli shayin AAalimeena

And to Solomon the stormy wind, blowing at his command towards the land that We have blessed. We are aware of everything.

  82. 82

Wamina alshshayateeni man yaghoosoona lahu wayaAAmaloona AAamalan doona thalika wakunna lahum hafitheena

And of the devils were some that dived for him, and performed other, lesser tasks. But We kept them restrained.

  83. 83

Waayyooba ith nada rabbahu annee massaniya alddurru waanta arhamu alrrahimeena

And Job, when he cried out to his Lord: “Great harm has afflicted me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

  84. 84

Faistajabna lahu fakashafna ma bihi min durrin waataynahu ahlahu wamithlahum maAAahum rahmatan min AAindina wathikra lilAAabideena

So We answered him, lifted his suffering, and restored his family to him, and their like with them—a mercy from Us, and a reminder for the worshipers.

  85. 85

WaismaAAeela waidreesa watha alkifli kullun mina alssabireena

And Ishmael, and Enoch, and Ezekiel; each was one of the steadfast.

  86. 86

Waadkhalnahum fee rahmatina innahum mina alssaliheena

And We admitted them into Our mercy. They were among the righteous.

  87. 87

Watha alnnooni ith thahaba mughadiban fathanna an lan naqdira AAalayhi fanada fee alththulumati an la ilaha illa anta subhanaka innee kuntu mina alththalimeena

And Jonah, when he stormed out in fury, thinking We had no power over him. But then he cried out in the darkness, “There is no god but You! Glory to You! I was one of the wrongdoers!”

  88. 88

Faistajabna lahu wanajjaynahu mina alghammi wakathalika nunjee almumineena

So We answered him, and saved him from the affliction. Thus We save the faithful.

  89. 89

Wazakariyya ith nada rabbahu rabbi la tatharnee fardan waanta khayru alwaritheena

And Zechariah, when he called out to his Lord, “My Lord, do not leave me alone, even though You are the Best of heirs.”

  90. 90

Faistajabna lahu wawahabna lahu yahya waaslahna lahu zawjahu innahum kanoo yusariAAoona fee alkhayrati wayadAAoonana raghaban warahaban wakanoo lana khashiAAeena

So We answered him, and gave him John. And We cured his wife for him. They used to vie in doing righteous deeds, and used to call on Us in love and awe, and they used to humble themselves to Us.

  91. 91

Waallatee ahsanat farjaha fanafakhna feeha min roohina wajaAAalnaha waibnaha ayatan lilAAalameena

And she who guarded her virginity. We breathed into her of Our spirit, and made her and her son a sign to the world.

  92. 92

Inna hathihi ommatukum ommatan wahidatan waana rabbukum faoAAbudooni

This community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.

  93. 93

WataqattaAAoo amrahum baynahum kullun ilayna rajiAAoona

But they splintered themselves into factions. They will all return to Us.

  94. 94

Faman yaAAmal mina alssalihati wahuwa muminun fala kufrana lisaAAyihi wainna lahu katiboona

Whoever does righteous deeds, and is a believer, his effort will not be denied. We are writing it down for him.

  95. 95

Waharamun AAala qaryatin ahlaknaha annahum la yarjiAAoona

There is a ban on the town that We had destroyed—that they will not return.

  96. 96

Hatta itha futihat yajooju wamajooju wahum min kulli hadabin yansiloona

Until, when Gog and Magog are let loose, and they swarm down from every mound.

  97. 97

Waiqtaraba alwaAAdu alhaqqu faitha hiya shakhisatun absaru allatheena kafaroo ya waylana qad kunna fee ghaflatin min hatha bal kunna thalimeena

The promise of truth has drawn near. The eyes of those who disbelieved will stare in horror: “Woe to us. We were oblivious to this. In fact, we were wrongdoers.”

  98. 98

Innakum wama taAAbudoona min dooni Allahi hasabu jahannama antum laha waridoona

You and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell. You will descend into it.

  99. 99

Law kana haolai alihatan ma waradooha wakullun feeha khalidoona

Had these been gods, they would not have descended into it. All will abide in it.

  100. 100

Lahum feeha zafeerun wahum feeha la yasmaAAoona

In it they will wail. In it they will not hear.

  101. 101

Inna allatheena sabaqat lahum minna alhusna olaika AAanha mubAAadoona

As for those who deserved goodness from Us—these will be kept away from it.

  102. 102

They will not hear its hissing, and they will forever abide in what their hearts desire.

  103. 103

La yahzunuhumu alfazaAAu alakbaru watatalaqqahumu almalaikatu hatha yawmukumu allathee kuntum tooAAadoona

The Supreme Fear will not worry them, and the angels will receive them: “This is your Day which you were promised.”

  104. 104

Yawma natwee alssamaa katayyi alssijlli lilkutubi kama badana awwala khalqin nuAAeeduhu waAAdan AAalayna inna kunna faAAileena

On the Day when We fold the heaven, like the folding of a book. Just as We began the first creation, We will repeat it—a promise binding on Us. We will act.

  105. 105

Walaqad katabna fee alzzaboori min baAAdi alththikri anna alarda yarithuha AAibadiya alssalihoona

We have written in the Psalms, after the Reminder, that the earth will be inherited by My righteous servants.

  106. 106

Inna fee hatha labalaghan liqawmin AAabideena

Indeed, in this is a message for people who worship.

  107. 107

    Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatan lilAAalameena

We did not send you except as mercy to mankind.

  108. 108

Qul innama yooha ilayya annama ilahukum ilahun wahidun fahal antum muslimoona

Say, “It is revealed to me that your god is One God. Are you going to submit?”

  109. 109

Fain tawallaw faqul athantukum AAala sawain wain adree aqareebun am baAAeedun ma tooAAadoona

But if they turn away, say, “I have informed you sufficiently. Although I do not know whether what you are promised is near or far.”

  110. 110

Innahu yaAAlamu aljahra mina alqawli wayaAAlamu ma taktumoona

He knows what is said openly, and He knows what you conceal.

  111. 111

Wain adree laAAallahu fitnatun lakum wamataAAun ila heenin

“And I do not know whether it is perhaps a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a while.”

  112. 112

Qala rabbi ohkum bialhaqqi warabbuna alrrahmanu almustaAAanu AAala ma tasifoona

He said, “My Lord, judge with justice.” And, “Our Lord is the Gracious, whose help is sought against what you allege.”
