What Surah Taha is about
Surah Taha is the twentieth surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 135 verses that closes the sixteenth juz. It is named after its opening letters, Ta and Ha (verse 1). Verse 2 sets a gentle tone: the Quran was not revealed to make the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ suffer, but as a reminder for those who fear Allah. Verses 4-8 describe Allah, the Most Merciful, who knows the secret and what is even more hidden, and to whom the most beautiful names belong.
Most of the surah tells the story of Moses (Musa). Traveling with his family, he sees a fire and goes toward it, and is called by his Lord in the sacred valley of Tuwa, told to remove his shoes and to pray in order to remember Allah (verses 9-14). His staff becomes a moving snake and his hand comes out white (verses 17-23). Sent to Pharaoh, Moses asks for an open heart, an easier task, a loosened tongue and his brother Aaron (Harun) as his helper (verses 25-35). Allah reminds him of earlier care: his mother placing him in a chest on the river, his sister guiding him back to her, and his years in Midian (verses 37-41). The brothers are told to speak gently to Pharaoh, in the hope that he may remember or fear Allah (verse 44).
Pharaoh asks who their Lord is, and Moses answers that it is the One who gave everything its form and then guided it (verse 50). The contest with the magicians takes place on the day of the festival; their ropes and sticks seem to move, Moses feels a moment of fear, and his staff swallows what they made (verses 57-69). The magicians fall in prostration and believe, and remain firm even under Pharaoh's threats (verses 70-73). The Children of Israel cross the sea (verses 77-79), but while Moses is away the Samiri leads them to worship a golden calf, and Aaron's warnings are ignored (verses 83-97).
The closing part looks at the Day of Resurrection, when voices are hushed before the Most Merciful (verses 102-112), and tells the Prophet ﷺ not to rush the Quran but to pray for more knowledge (verse 114). The story of Adam follows: he forgets his covenant, is tempted to the tree by Satan, and is then chosen, forgiven and guided by his Lord (verses 115-122). Whoever follows Allah's guidance will not go astray, but whoever turns from His reminder will have a narrow life (verses 123-124). The surah ends by urging patience, glorifying Allah before sunrise and sunset, and not envying the splendor others enjoy (verses 130-132).
Main themes
Moses called at the sacred valley
Moses goes toward a fire hoping for a torch or directions, and instead hears his Lord speaking to him. He is told to take off his shoes, that he has been chosen, and to establish prayer for Allah's remembrance, before being shown the signs of the staff and the shining hand.
Verses 9–24Moses' prayer for an open heart
Before facing Pharaoh, Moses asks Allah to expand his chest, ease his task, untie the knot in his tongue and give him his brother Aaron as support, so they can glorify and remember Allah much. Allah grants his request and reminds him of how He protected him as a baby.
Verses 25–41Speaking gently to a tyrant
Even though Pharaoh has gone beyond all bounds, Moses and Aaron are told to speak to him with gentle words in the hope that he may reflect. When they fear him, Allah tells them He is with them, hearing and seeing.
Verses 42–50The magicians who believed
The magicians come to defeat Moses and end up prostrating to the Lord of Aaron and Moses. Threatened with crucifixion by Pharaoh, they reply that he can only rule over this worldly life, and that Allah is better and more lasting.
Verses 65–76The golden calf
While Moses meets his Lord, the Samiri shapes a lowing calf from the people's ornaments and they worship it. Moses returns angry and grieved, confronts Aaron and the Samiri, and declares that their god is Allah alone, who encompasses everything in knowledge.
Verses 83–98Adam's slip and forgiveness
Adam is warned that Satan is his enemy, is tempted with the tree of immortality, and eats from it with his wife. Then his Lord chooses him, turns to him in forgiveness and guides him, and promises that whoever follows His guidance will not go astray or be miserable.
Verses 115–124
Verses to know
I—I am Allah. There is no god but I. So serve Me, and practice the prayer for My remembrance.
Allah introduces Himself to Moses and commands him to establish prayer for His remembrance. The Prophet ﷺ is reported in Sahih Muslim to have recited this verse when speaking about making up a prayer one has slept through or forgotten.
25He said, “My Lord, put my heart at peace for me. 26And ease my task for me. 27And untie the knot from my tongue. 28So they can understand my speech.
Moses' request for an open heart, an easier task and a loosened tongue is one of the best-known supplications in the Quran, often recited before exams, interviews or speaking in public.
But speak to him nicely. Perhaps he will remember, or have some fear.”
Even Pharaoh was to be addressed with gentle words, which is often cited as a lesson in how to speak to people we strongly disagree with.
Exalted is Allah, the True King. Do not be hasty with the Quran before its inspiration to you is concluded, and say, “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
The short prayer at the end of this verse, asking the Lord to increase one in knowledge, is widely memorized by students.
When Surah Taha is recited
There is no well-established narration assigning Surah Taha to a particular time. It is often associated with the conversion of Umar ibn al-Khattab, who, according to an account in the early biographies of the Prophet ﷺ, was moved to accept Islam after reading the opening of this surah at his sister's house. Hadith scholars have considered the chains of this account weak, though it is widely told. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud names Ta-Ha among the early surahs he treasured.

So Moses returned to his people, angry and disappointed. He said, “O my people, did your Lord not promise you a good promise? Was the time too long for you? Or did you want wrath from your Lord to descend upon you, so you broke your promise to me?”
- 87

Nor will you be thirsty in it, nor will you swelter.”
- 120
Fawaswasa ilayhi alshshaytanu qala ya adamu hal adulluka AAala shajarati alkhuldi wamulkin la yabla
But Satan whispered to him. He said, “O Adam, shall I show you the Tree of Immortality, and a kingdom that never decays?”
- 121
Faakala minha fabadat lahuma sawatuhuma watafiqa yakhsifani AAalayhima min waraqi aljannati waAAasa adamu rabbahu faghawa
And so they ate from it; whereupon their bodies became visible to them, and they started covering themselves with the leaves of the Garden. Thus Adam disobeyed his Lord, and fell.
- 122
Thumma ijtabahu rabbuhu fataba AAalayhi wahada
But then his Lord recalled him, and pardoned him, and guided him.
- 123
Qala ihbita minha jameeAAan baAAdukum libaAAdin AAaduwwun faimma yatiyannakum minnee hudan famani ittabaAAa hudaya fala yadillu wala yashqa
He said, “Go down from it, all together; some of you enemies of some others. But whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, will not go astray, nor suffer.
- 124
Waman aAArada AAan thikree fainna lahu maAAeeshatan dankan wanahshuruhu yawma alqiyamati aAAman
But whoever turns away from My Reminder, for him is a confined life. And We will raise him on the Day of Resurrection blind.”
- 125
Qala rabbi lima hashartanee aAAma waqad kuntu baseeran
He will say, “My Lord, why did You raise me blind, though I was seeing?”
- 126
Qala kathalika atatka ayatuna fanaseetaha wakathalika alyawma tunsa
He will say, “Just as Our revelations came to you, and you forgot them, today you will be forgotten.”
- 127
Wakathalika najzee man asrafa walam yumin biayati rabbihi walaAAathabu alakhirati ashaddu waabqa
Thus We recompense him who transgresses and does not believe in the revelations of his Lord. The punishment of the Hereafter is more severe, and more lasting.
- 128
Afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlakna qablahum mina alqurooni yamshoona fee masakinihim inna fee thalika laayatin liolee alnnuha
Is it not instructive to them, how many generations before them We destroyed, in whose settlements they walk? Surely in that are signs for people of understanding.
- 129
Walawla kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika lakana lizaman waajalun musamman
Were it not for a word that issued from your Lord, the inevitable would have happened, but there is an appointed term.
- 130
Faisbir AAala ma yaqooloona wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulooAAi alshshamsi waqabla ghuroobiha wamin anai allayli fasabbih waatrafa alnnahari laAAallaka tarda
So bear patiently what they say, and celebrate the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting. And during the hours of the night glorify Him, and at the borders of the day, that you may be satisfied.
- 131
Wala tamuddanna AAaynayka ila ma mattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum zahrata alhayati alddunya linaftinahum feehi warizqu rabbika khayrun waabqa
And do not extend your glance towards what We have given some classes of them to enjoy—the splendor of the life of this world—that We may test them thereby. Your Lord’s provision is better, and more lasting.
- 132
Wamur ahlaka bialssalati waistabir AAalayha la nasaluka rizqan nahnu narzuquka waalAAaqibatu lilttaqwa
And exhort your people to pray, and patiently adhere to it. We ask of you no sustenance, but it is We who sustain you. The good ending is that for righteousness.
- 133
Waqaloo lawla yateena biayatin min rabbihi awalam tatihim bayyinatu ma fee alssuhufi aloola
And they say, “Why does he not bring us a miracle from his Lord?” Were they not given enough miracles in the former scriptures?
- 134
Walaw anna ahlaknahum biAAathabin min qablihi laqaloo rabbana lawla arsalta ilayna rasoolan fanattabiAAa ayatika min qabli an nathilla wanakhza
Had We destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, “Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger, we would have followed Your revelations before we were humiliated and disgraced.”
- 135
Qul kullun mutarabbisun fatarabbasoo fasataAAlamoona man ashabu alssirati alssawiyyi wamani ihtada
Say, “Everybody is waiting, so wait. You will know who the people of the straight path are, and who is rightly-guided.”
