What Surah At-Taghabun is about
At-Taghabun is the 64th surah of the Quran, with 18 verses. It is listed as Medinan, though some early scholars held that its opening part was revealed in Mecca. It is the last of the surahs that open with all creation glorifying Allah. Its name, often translated as mutual disillusion or mutual loss and gain, comes from verse 9, which calls the Day of Gathering the Day of Taghabun, when people find out who truly gained and who truly lost.
Verses 1 to 4 describe Allah as the owner of the kingdom, who created people, shaped them well, and knows what they hide and what they show. Verses 5 and 6 recall earlier nations who refused messengers because they were human beings. Verse 7 answers those who deny resurrection with an oath that they will be raised and told what they did. Verses 8 to 10 invite belief and describe the Day of Gathering and its two outcomes.
The second half turns to everyday faith. Verse 11 says no disaster strikes except by Allah's permission, and that whoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. Verse 13 asks the believers to place their trust in Him. Verses 14 and 15 speak candidly about family: some spouses and children can become a kind of enemy to a person's faith, yet the believer is encouraged to pardon and forgive, and wealth and children are described as a test. Verse 16 asks people to be mindful of Allah as much as they are able, to listen, obey and spend. The surah ends with the promise that a good loan to Allah will be multiplied.
Main themes
The Creator who knows everything
The opening verses say that Allah created people, some believing and some not, and formed them in the best way. He knows what is in the heavens and earth, and what is hidden in hearts.
Verses 1–4Resurrection and the Day of Taghabun
Verse 7 answers the denial of resurrection directly. Verse 9 names the Day of Gathering as the Day of Taghabun, when the real winners and losers are made plain.
Verses 7–10Hardship and a guided heart
Verse 11 says every disaster comes by Allah's permission and that He guides the heart of whoever believes in Him. The surah links acceptance of hardship directly to inner guidance.
Verses 11–13Family, wealth and forgiveness
Verses 14 and 15 recognize that loved ones and possessions can pull a person away from Allah, and call them a test. The response the surah asks for is pardon and forgiveness, not harshness, together with mindfulness of Allah within one's ability.
Verses 14–18
Verses to know
The Day when He gathers you for the Day of Gathering—that is the Day of Mutual Exchange. Whoever believes in Allah and acts with integrity, He will remit his misdeeds, and will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme achievement.
The verse that gives the surah its name, describing the Day of Gathering as the day when people's true gain and loss become clear.
No disaster occurs except by Allah’s leave. Whoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. Allah is Aware of everything.
A short verse of comfort: nothing happens without Allah's permission, and believing in Him brings guidance to the heart.
O you who believe! Among your spouses and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon, and overlook, and forgive—Allah is Forgiver and Merciful.
An honest verse about family life that still ends with pardon, overlooking and forgiveness. At-Tirmidhi reports from Ibn Abbas that it concerned men in Mecca whose families held them back from joining the Prophet ﷺ.
So be conscious of Allah as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for your own good. He who is protected from his stinginess—these are the prosperous.
This verse asks believers to be mindful of Allah as much as they can, a reminder that religion is measured by each person's real capacity.
