What Surah At-Talaq is about

At-Talaq is the 65th surah of the Quran, revealed in Medina, with 12 verses. Its name means The Divorce. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud refers to it as the shorter Surah An-Nisa, a name usually understood to reflect that, like Surah An-Nisa, it deals with family matters.

The surah opens in verse 1 by addressing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and through him the community. It asks that divorce be timed correctly and that the waiting period be counted, and that women not be put out of their homes during it. It ends that verse by noting that Allah may bring about a new situation afterward, leaving room for reconciliation. Verse 2 asks that the couple either stay together on good terms or part on good terms, with two just witnesses.

Woven through these rules are some of the most quoted promises in the Quran. Verses 2 and 3 say that whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for them and provide from where they never expected, and that Allah is enough for whoever relies on Him. Verse 4 adds that He will make things easy for such a person, and verse 5 that He will remove their sins.

Verses 4 to 7 cover waiting periods for different situations, the woman's right to housing and maintenance, and payment for nursing a child, ending with the reminder in verse 7 that Allah does not burden a soul beyond what He has given it and will bring ease after hardship. Verses 8 to 11 recall towns that defied their Lord and describe the Messenger as a reminder bringing people from darkness into light. Verse 12 closes with seven heavens and as many earths, and Allah's knowledge encompassing all.

Main themes

  1. Dignity in divorce

The surah asks that divorce follow a set process, that women stay in their homes during the waiting period, and that the marriage end, if it must, on honorable terms with witnesses. Verse 1 calls these Allah's limits and warns that overstepping them wrongs one's own soul.

    Verses 1–2
  2. A way out for the mindful

Verses 2 and 3 promise a way out and unexpected provision to those mindful of Allah, and that He is enough for those who trust Him. The surah repeats this idea in verses 4 and 5 with ease and forgiveness.

    Verses 2–5
  3. Housing, maintenance and nursing

Verse 6 says divorced women should be housed according to the husband's means and not harassed, and that pregnant women are supported until they give birth. It also covers fair payment for nursing and mutual consultation.

    Verses 6–7
  4. Ease after hardship

Verse 7 asks each person to spend according to their means, says Allah burdens no one beyond what He has given, and promises ease after hardship. The surah then reminds readers of towns that defied their Lord and of the light the Messenger brings.

    Verses 7–12

Verses to know

O Prophet! If any of you divorce women, divorce them during their period of purity, and calculate their term. And be pious before Allah, your Lord. And do not evict them from their homes, nor shall they leave, unless they have committed a proven adultery. These are the limits of Allah—whoever oversteps Allah’s limits has wronged his own soul. You never know; Allah may afterwards bring about a new situation.
At-Talaq 65:1

Within the rules of divorce, this verse ends by saying Allah may bring about something new afterward, a gentle reminder that reconciliation may still be possible.

2Once they have reached their term, either retain them honorably, or separate from them honorably. And call to witness two just people from among you, and give upright testimony for Allah. By that is exhorted whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever fears Allah—He will make a way out for him. 3And will provide for him from where he never expected. Whoever relies on Allah—He will suffice him. Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has set a measure to all things.
At-Talaq 65:2–3

Among the most quoted verses in the Quran: whoever is mindful of Allah will be given a way out and provision from unexpected places, and Allah is enough for whoever relies on Him.

The wealthy shall spend according to his means; and he whose resources are restricted shall spend according to what Allah has given him. Allah never burdens a soul beyond what He has given it. Allah will bring ease after hardship.
At-Talaq 65:7

This verse asks people to give according to their means and promises that Allah will bring ease after hardship.
