Quran verses about friendship

The Quran takes friendship seriously because it knows how much companions shape a person. Believers are described as awliya', close friends and protectors, of one another, who encourage good, pray and give together. The Prophet ﷺ is told to keep himself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and evening.

The Quran also warns about the other side. On the Day of Judgment, it says, friends will become enemies to each other, except those who were mindful of Allah, and one person will bite his hands wishing he had never taken a certain friend. Yet the Quran is hopeful too: it shows hearts that were once enemies joined by Allah into brotherhood, and it pictures friends in Paradise facing each other with all ill-feeling removed. The verses below cover choosing friends, being a good friend, and the friendships that last.

The believing men and believing women are friends of one another. They advocate virtue, forbid evil, perform the prayers, practice charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. These—Allah will have mercy on them. Allah is Noble and Wise.
    At-Tawbah 9:71

Believing men and women are friends and protectors of one another, encouraging good, praying and giving charity.

And content yourself with those who pray to their Lord morning and evening, desiring His Presence. And do not turn your eyes away from them, desiring the glitter of this world. And do not obey him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance—so he follows his own desires—and his priorities are confused.
    Al-Kahf 18:28

The Prophet ﷺ is told to keep himself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, and not to follow people who are heedless.

On that Day, friends will be enemies of one another, except for the righteous.
    Az-Zukhruf 43:67

On that Day close friends will become enemies to each other, except those who were mindful of Allah.

27On that Day, the wrongdoer will bite his hands, and say, “If only I had followed the way with the Messenger. 28Oh, woe to me; I wish I never took so-and-so for a friend. 29He led me away from the Message after it had come to me; for Satan has always been a betrayer of man.”
    Al-Furqan 25:27–29

A wrongdoer bites his hands in regret, wishing he had never taken a certain person as a friend who led him away from the reminder.

Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger—these are with those whom Allah has blessed—among the prophets, and the sincere, and the martyrs, and the upright. Excellent are those as companions.
    An-Nisa 4:69

Those who obey Allah and the Messenger will be with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous, and the verse says these are excellent companions.

And hold fast to the rope of Allah, all together, and do not become divided. And remember Allah’s blessings upon you; how you were enemies, and He reconciled your hearts, and by His grace you became brethren. And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it. Allah thus clarifies His revelations for you, so that you may be guided.
    Ali 'Imran 3:103

Allah reminds believers that they were once enemies and He joined their hearts, so that by His grace they became brothers.

The believers are brothers, so reconcile between your brothers, and remain conscious of Allah, so that you may receive mercy.
    Al-Hujurat 49:10

Believers are brothers and sisters, so make peace between them.

11O you who believe! No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names. Evil is the return to wickedness after having attained faith. Whoever does not repent—these are the wrongdoers. 12O you who believe! Avoid most suspicion—some suspicion is sinful. And do not spy on one another, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. So remain mindful of Allah. Allah is Most Relenting, Most Merciful.
    Al-Hujurat 49:11–12

Friends and fellow believers should not mock one another, call each other names, spy, backbite or think badly without reason.

Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with good, and the person who was your enemy becomes like an intimate friend.
    Fussilat 41:34

Answering harm with good can turn an enemy into a warm, close friend.

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed—it is they who are the successful.
    Al-Hashr 59:9

The people of Medina loved those who came to them as emigrants and put them first, even when in need themselves.

And those who came after them, saying, “Our Lord, forgive us, and our brethren who preceded us in faith, and leave no malice in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are Clement and Merciful.”
    Al-Hashr 59:10

Later believers pray for those who came before them and ask Allah to leave no ill-feeling in their hearts toward other believers.

If you do not help him, Allah has already helped him, when those who disbelieved expelled him, and he was the second of two in the cave. He said to his friend, “Do not worry, Allah is with us.” And Allah made His tranquility descend upon him, and supported him with forces you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the Word of Allah is the Highest. Allah is Mighty and Wise.
    At-Tawbah 9:40

In the cave during the emigration, the Prophet ﷺ comforts his companion, telling him not to grieve because Allah is with them.

And We will remove all ill-feelings from their hearts—brothers and sisters, on couches facing one another.
    Al-Hijr 15:47

In Paradise, Allah removes any ill-feeling from people's hearts, and they sit as brothers on couches facing one another.

The Quran's advice on friendship is practical: stay close to people who remind you of Allah, guard your tongue about the friends you have, and make peace quickly when things go wrong. The prayer in 59:10, asking Allah to remove ill-feeling from your heart toward others, is a good one to say for the people in your life.
