Quran verses about the heart
In the Quran the heart, qalb, is more than a seat of feeling. It is where a person understands, believes and turns toward or away from Allah. The Quran says it is not the eyes that go blind but the hearts within the chests, and that on the Day of Judgment only a sound heart, qalb salim, will help.
The Quran describes hearts in many states. They can harden like rock, become rusted over by what people do, or be locked. They can also soften at the mention of Allah, be opened, find rest, and receive tranquility from Him. Because the heart can change, the Quran teaches believers to pray that Allah keep their hearts from swerving, and reminds them that Allah stands between a person and their heart. The verses below trace these states and the ways the Quran points toward a living, softened heart.
88The Day when neither wealth nor children will help. 89Except for him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”
Ash-Shu'ara 26:88–89 Abraham (Ibrahim) prays about the Day when wealth and children will not help, except for whoever comes to Allah with a sound heart.
Those who believe, and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find comfort.
Ar-Ra'd 13:28 Hearts find rest and calm in the remembrance of Allah.
Have they not journeyed in the land, and had minds to reason with, or ears to listen with? It is not the eyes that go blind, but it is the hearts, within the chests, that go blind.
Al-Hajj 22:46 It is not the eyes that go blind, but the hearts within the chests.
Then after that your hearts hardened. They were as rocks, or even harder. For there are some rocks from which rivers gush out, and others that splinter and water comes out from them, and others that sink in awe of Allah. Allah is not unaware of what you do.
Al-Baqarah 2:74 After all the Children of Israel had seen, their hearts became hard like rock or harder, though even some rocks split and let water flow out.
Not at all. Their hearts have become corroded by what they used to earn.
Al-Mutaffifin 83:14 What people keep doing can cover their hearts like rust.
Is it not time for those who believe to surrender their hearts to the remembrance of Allah, and to the truth that has come down, and not be like those who were given the Book previously, but time became prolonged for them, so their hearts hardened, and many of them are sinners?
Al-Hadid 57:16 Believers are asked whether it is not time for their hearts to soften at the remembrance of Allah, and warned not to be like those whose hearts hardened over time.
22What about someone whose heart Allah has opened to Islam, so that he follows a light from his Lord? Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the mention of Allah. Those are in manifest error. 23Allah has sent down the best of narrations: A Scripture consistent and paired. The skins of those who reverence their Lord shiver from it, then their skins and their hearts soften up to the remembrance of Allah. Such is Allah’s guidance; He guides with it whomever He wills. But whomever Allah leaves astray, for him there is no guide.
Az-Zumar 39:22–23 Allah opens some hearts to Islam, and the Quran causes the skin to shiver and then the skin and hearts to soften at His remembrance.
In that is a reminder for whoever possesses a heart, or cares to listen and witness.
Qaf 50:37 The Quran is a reminder for anyone who has a heart or listens attentively.
O you who believe! Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to what will revive you. And know that Allah stands between a man and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.
Al-Anfal 8:24 Allah calls people to what gives them life, and He stands between a person and their heart.
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. Had he obeyed you in many things, you would have suffered hardship. But Allah has given you the love of faith, and adorned it in your hearts, and made disbelief, mischief, and rebellion hateful to you. These are the rightly guided.
Al-Hujurat 49:7 Allah has made faith beloved to the believers and beautified it in their hearts.
It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers, to add faith to their faith. To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth. Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Al-Fath 48:4 Allah sends tranquility into the hearts of believers so their faith grows.
No disaster occurs except by Allah’s leave. Whoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. Allah is Aware of everything.
At-Taghabun 64:11 Whoever believes in Allah, He guides their heart.
“Our Lord, do not cause our hearts to swerve after You have guided us, and bestow on us mercy from Your presence; You are the Giver.”
Ali 'Imran 3:8 A prayer that Allah not let our hearts swerve after He has guided us.
The Quran treats the heart as something that changes with what we do, which means it can always be tended. Regular remembrance, reading the Quran slowly, and the short prayer in 3:8 are simple ways to look after it. A heart that feels hard today is not a final verdict; 57:16 is an invitation, not a judgment.
